Introduction: Spicy Beans

Here is a tasty, tangy South African dish that is easy to prepare. With just a few ingredients you can turn an ordinary can of baked beans into an extraordinary side dish or main meal.

Step 1: Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp. of oil (vegetable or olive)
  • 1 Large onion chopped
  • 1 Tomato chopped
  • 3/4 tsp. coriander powder
  • 1 Tbsp. curry powder (or more if you prefer it spicier)
  • 1/2 cup chutney (we prefer Mrs. Ball's chutney which you can order off of Amazon)

Step 2: Fry Your Onions

Chop your onion and set it aside. Heat your oil over medium heat. A cast iron pan works best but any frying pan will do. Once your oil is heated, add your onions and fry for about five minutes until onions are soft and are slightly browned.

Step 3: Add Coriander and Tomato

While the onions are cooking, dice your tomato. After the onions have cooked for about five minutes, add the coriander powder and stir for one minute. Then add the tomatoes to the onions and cook for another five minutes or until tomatoes are getting soft and separating from the skins.

Step 4: Add Curry Powder, Beans, and Chutney

When the tomatoes are softened, add the curry powder and stir for one minute. Then add your beans and stir thoroughly. Turn down your heat to low and add the chutney. Simmer for 10 minutes, remove from heat.

Step 5: Enjoy!

Now you can serve it with bread or as a side to your main meal.
