Introduction: Sticks Card Game

This is a variation of a card game "Phase 10". Instead of 10 phases of requirements that everyone must do, this game has random challenges on sticks. My wife's aunt (my aunt-in-law?) presented the game to us the other day and I offered to use our local Makerspace to laser etch the challenges on the individual sticks.

You don't need a laser cutter to make this game; print out and tape the challenges to each stick. I'll be packaging the sticks, cards and rules in a nice bag that her aunt can bring to parties.

Step 1: Prepare Sticks

Use the attached Coreldraw file if you have access to a laser cutter. Otherwise use the PDF to print out the challenges.

  • 50x jumbo craft sticks (or tongue depressors)
  • 4x deck of cards
  • mesh bag

Step 2: Rules

  1. Four decks of cards are needed for this game, including the jokers. Jokers and deuces are wild cards.
  2. Deal 15 cards to each player.
  3. Each player draws one stick - check what is on the stick and turn the writing face down.
  4. Once a player has all the cards requires for the stick, they must lay the cards down and turn the stick over for everyone to see.
  5. Each sequence (run or set) must have one natural card (ie: 3, 4, 5 of hearts must have either the 3, 4, or 5 of hearts with 2 wild cards or two natural cards with one wild card)
  6. Once a player has laid down, they can play on cards face up on the table (ie: play one anyone else who has laid down their cards)
  7. You can add to the sets but you can't pick up the wilds out of the set. Wilds can be picked up out of runs but must be replaced with the natural card. Runs be continued as well.
  8. If in playing you throw away a card which is playable on the hands already laid down, you must pick up two cards.
  9. There are four free sticks. If you draw a free stick, you draw another. If a free stick is drawn for the seventh hand (finish of game), you must draw another as you cannot end with a free stick.
  10. There are two steal a stick sticks. If you draw one, you can then steal a completed stick from any player, then draw a new playing stick. You can't win on a steal a stick.
  11. The first player to complete the requirements of seven sticks turned over wins, even if they don't go out.
  12. If two players have completed the requirements of seven sticks in the same round, and one of them goes out, they are the winner. Otherwise the first person to complete seven sticks is the winner.
  13. Optional - Agree whether or not to play with this rule before you start: You can only pick up off the discard pile on the first round. Then you can only draw from the pile until you lay down you stick requirements.

Step 3: Package

I used a large mesh bag to package the sticks, playing cards and printed instructions. It's a nice touch that I'm sure my aunt-in-law will appreciate on her game nights.
