I molded these knitting needle tip covers because I needed something to prevent my work from slipping off the needles. Sugru is a putty-like substance that dries into a hard rubber, so I was able to form the tip around the needle for a tight fit.

Step 1: The Ingredients

All you need for this little project is some Sugru and your needles. I used my size 8 Hiya-Hiya needles and black Sugru.

Step 2: The Sugru

I used about a half packet of Sugru for both of the tip covers. Once you open the packet, it begins to set immediately but it takes about half an hour before it is unusable. You can either put the extra Sugru in the fridge to extend this window a little or use it for a second set of tip covers.

Step 3: The Shaping

I found that the best way to create the tip covers was to create a flat disk and then mold it around the tip of the needle. Make sure you have an even amount of Sugru all the way around the needle.

Step 4: The Drying

Sugru takes around 24 hours to fully set. I was concerned that it would adhere to the needles if I allowed it to dry all the way, so I let them set for 3 hours and then removed the tip covers from the needles. I let them set for the remainder of the day and they hardened nicely.

If you don't want to use a whole packet on knitting needles, this would also be a great way to use up any left over Sugru from other projects. I would love to see other needle covers in the comments!
