Thinking Outside the Box to Make a Frame

This is a step by step tutorial on how to think outside of the box to make a basic frame out of cardboard.

Step 1: Find a Box

The size of your box with vary depending on the size of the picture you are wanting to frame. Nonetheless, start with finding any cardboard box.

Step 2: Flatten Your Box

Use scissors to cut the tape that is holding the box together and flatten your box.

Step 3: Cut Section of Box for the Main Part of Your Frame

Because of how small the picture was that I'm using for this tutorial, the side of the box works fine. However, judge for yourself depending on what it is that you want to frame to know how much of the box you should cut out.

Step 4: Trace Where Picture Will Fit on Your Frame

Trace where you want your picture to fit on your frame. I used pencil because I want to have something that will erase and not be seen on the frame.

Step 5: Cut Out an Opening

You will want to cut an opening that is smaller than what you traced so the picture will not fall through the frame. Judge by your preference of how much of the picture you want to have showing to judge how much you want to cut out. It helped to use one blade of the scissors to first cut into the box (see picture above). I was able to use the scissors the way you're supposed to hold scissors then after having made an opening with one blade of the scissors.

Step 6: Attach Your Picture

Flip your frame over and place your picture face down so the picture can be seen in the frame. Attach picture with strips of tape on the back of the picture. You may also use glue or any other means that will hold the picture in place.

Step 7: Back of Frame

Cut out another piece of cardboard and size it so it fits on the back of the frame while covering the picture. You only have to cut a big enough piece to cover the picture, however, as this will make attaching the additional piece of cardboard to the frame easier. Use tape to attach the second piece of cardboard to the main part of your frame.

Step 8: Finished

Now your cardboard frame is finished. Feel free decorate your frame as you wish. I made a second, bigger frame with the same idea. No go make some art and think outside the box for your frame!
