Introduction: Turning a T-Shirt Into a Pillow

Do you have old t-shirts in your house that you no longer wear? You could either donate them or you could turn them into something entirely new! The shirts can be cut up and then sewn into brand new throw pillows. These pillows can either make great gifts or they can help you turn a shirt that is special to you into something new.

Supplies

For this project you will need an old t-shirt that you no longer wear, measuring tape, pins, a needle, thread, a sewing machine, and pillow filling. I took the filling out of a pillow in my house that was going to be thrown away. If you do not have pillow stuffing to use, you could substitute with foam, feathers, or even an old bed topper.

Step 1: Measuring the Pillow

You can make your pillow any size that you would like. I will be making my pillow 12"x12". Once you decide how big you want your pillow to be, you can then begin pinning. You want to pin the front side and back side of the shirt together. This will ensure that both sides of the pillow are the same size.

Step 2: Pin Right Sides Together

Once both pieces are cut out, you will need to unpin the fabric. Then you will place the right sides together, making the pillow inside out, and then pin the two pieces of fabric together once again.

Step 3: Begin Sewing

Next, you want to sew the two sides together. I sewed my seam so that it was 1/4" away from the edge of the fabric. You are going to want to sew all the way around the pillow however, a small hole will need to be left open at the end.

Step 4: Stuff the Pillow

Once the pillow has been sewn, you will need to turn it inside out. The right sides of the fabric should now be showing. Next, you will need to stuff the pillow. You can add as much stuffing as you personally want.

Step 5: Sew the Hole Closed

Finally, you will need to hand sew the hole closed. I pinned the hole closed after tucking in the raw edges. This will make the seam look much neater.

Step 6: Completed Pillow

Once you sew the hole closed, you will have a perfect throw pillow made from a t-shirt!
