It seems lately that this summer has required more travel than the standard. Normally, it is as simple as packing my tings and heading out. However, this summer we adopted a puppy so travel has become more difficult. I decided to make a traveling kit for our puppy to make traveling with her a little easier. So if you have a pet and need to travel, read on!

Step 1: Supplies

For this project, you will need the following supplies...

Large tin can with lid (popcorn tins are great sized)
Paint
Cardboard
Xacto knife
Paper cutter (optional)
Stencil (optional)

Step 2: Painting

I wanted to cover up the old exterior of the can since I personally couldn't stand the yellow background. While another color would have been more interesting, I had a can of flat black spray paint laying around and decided to use that for convenience sake.

Step 3: Stencil

Because I painted the can with a boring black, I wanted to add something extra to the lid. I decided to make a stencil and print it out to add to the lid of the can. Once it was printed out, I used the xacto knife and the paper cutter to trim the paper down so I could tape it down on the lid for painting. if you decide to do this, use very light coats of spray paint as it not only looks better but also stays much better within the stencil.

Step 4: Divider Insert

Since I wanted to carry more than just dog food in the kit, I wanted to have something inside to divide it into separate compartments. I measured and cut a pizza box to size so that it would be slightly recessed from the rim of the can. I measured the width of the cardboard so that one of the two compartments would be larger as food will be the quickest consumed item from the can. Once the divider was finished it was ready to fill.

Step 5: Fill and Finished

Once it was can was finished, I filled it up with all of the essentials for an extended weekend trip and some extra water for the trip in case puppy gets thirsty. The can will hold about three days worth of food, more than enough water for any weekend trip, plenty of dog biscuits, and a couple of toys. Future kits would possibly include a collapsible bowl that can fit in the can. Even as is, it makes it easy to gather supplies and know your puppy will be well supplied on most weekend trips.
