Zipper Pouch With Square Bottom and Lining

Supplies:

Scissors
Chalk
Tread
Ruler
Straight pins
One 7" zipper
1/4 yard of woven fabric

Step 1: Step 1: Measuring Out Your Pouch Pattern

Draw a 8"x7" rectangle on your fabric:

Measure 8" across, starting at the selvage edge and make a mark.
From the bottom of the pouch measure up 7" on both sides.
Draw a line from one side to the other to make an 8"x7" rectangle

*Since we are using 7" zippers you want your pouch to be 8" wide, a total of 1" extra for seam allowances. If you use a longer zipper just make your width 1" longer then the length of the zipper teeth.

At each of the bottom corners of your pouch you will draw a 1" square.
You should now have a 8"x7" rectangle with 1" indents at the bottom corners.

Step 2: Step 2: Cut Out Pouch Pieces

Cut out your first pouch piece
Pin this piece to the fabric (you can fold your fabric in half to cut out 2 at a time) and cut carefully around the edges. Make sure that the pins don't overlap the edge of the fabric so you wont accidentally cut into them as you are cutting it out.
Repeat the tracing and cutting until you have 4 pouch pieces that are exactly the same.

*2 pieces will be your outside fabric and 2 will be your lining. If you want make your lining pieces a different color than your outside pieces go for it and get fancy!

Step 3: Step 3: Making a "Zipper Sandwich"

Lay one of your outside fabric pieces face-up.
Put your zipper face-down on the outside fabric lining it up with the top edge.
Lay one of your lining fabrics face-down on top of both the zipper and the outside piece.
Line up the pouch pieces so they match.
At the top of your pouch you should now have a "zipper sandwich" with the outside fabric and lining fabric both facing in towards the zipper.
Pin along your top edge through all 3 layers.

Step 4: Step 4: Sewing Your Zipper

Find your machine's zipper foot and put it on your machine (if you don't know which one is your zipper foot check in your owners manual).
Feel for your zipper through the fabric.
Lower your zipper foot down, just to the right of your zipper's ridge.
The foot will act as a guide and keep you next to the zipper as you sew the length of your zipper.
Whenever you start and stop sewing a seam you have to backstitch to tie your knot.
If your zipper head is not too big steer around it as long as you are still able to sew all three layers together.
If your zipper has a large head, stop when your reach it, pull out your fabric, unzip the zipper so it's past where you have already sewn.
Re-pin the un-sewn area, and sew the rest of your "zipper sandwich" together.

Step 5: Step 5: Iron Your Pieces Away From Your Zipper

Open up your first side.
Use an iron to flatten the fold of the fabric away from your zipper teeth. *If you are using a plastic zipper don't let the iron get too close to the teeth or they will melt!
Iron on both sides so now you can see the un-sewn edge of your zipper clearly.

Step 6: Step 6: "Zipper Sandwich" Part 2

Now repeat the same steps for your zipper sandwich but with your remaining two pieces.

Lay your un-sewn lining fabric down face up.
Place the back of your zipper on the top of the lining with the un-sewn side lined up with the top of the pouch.
Place your outside fabric face down on top.
Line up your zipper and fabric edges.
Pin together your 2nd "zipper sandwich" like a boss.

Step 7: Step 7: Sew Up Your Second "Zipper Sandwich"

Feel for your zipper through the fabric.
Lower your zipper foot down, just to the right of your zipper's ridge. The foot will act as a guide as you sew the length of your zipper.**If your zipper has a large head, stop when your reach it, pull out your fabric, unzip the zipper so it's past where you have already sewn. Re-pin the un-sewn area, and sew the rest of your "zipper sandwich" together.
If your zipper head is not too big you can steer around it as long as you are still able to sew all three layers together.
Whenever you start and stop sewing a seam you have to backstitch to tie your knot.

Step 8: Step 8: Iron Your Pieces Away From Your Zipper.

Open up your pieces so you can see your zipper.
Use an iron to flatten the fold of the fabric away from your zipper teeth. *If you are using a plastic zipper don't let the iron get too close to the teeth or they will melt!
Iron on both sides so now you can see the pouch pieces on either side of the zipper.
Unzip the zipper halfway.

Step 9: Step 9: Pin Your Pouch

Lay the pouch out so that the right sides of lining fabric are touching and the right sides of the outside fabric are touching. The zipper should be in the middle and you should be looking at the wrong side of your fabric.
On one side fold the zipper tape ends in the same direction and pin in place.
Repeat on the other side making sure the zipper tape is folded in the same direction as the first side.
Pin both long sides.
Pin the short edge of the outside fabric completely.
Pin the short edge of the lining fabric but leave a 4" gap in the middle unpinned. *This gap will not be sewn and will serve as the opening you will use to turn your sewn pouch right side out.
Do not pin or sew your indented corners.

Step 10: Step 10: Sew Up Your Sides

Change out your zipper foot for your standard presser foot.
All seams will be sewn with a 5/8" seam allowance. Line up the edge of your fabric with the 5/8" guideline on your machine. To make it easier to see you can also tape the line with blue painters tape.
Whenever you start and stop sewing a seam you have to backstitch to tie your knot.
Sew the long sides of your pouch using a 5/8" seam allowance. *Go slow over the zipper tape, if you feel like your needle might hit your zipper teeth you can stop and hand crank your machine over this area.
Sew the short edge of the outside pieces.
Sew the ends of the short side of your lining but leave a 4" gap in the middle un-sewn. This will serve as the opening once your bag is complete.

Step 11: Step 11: Pinch and Pin Your Corners

Pinch one side of one of the indented corners and pull it away from the other.
Match up the seams and lay it down flat. *It kind of feels like an origami fold.
Pin them in place.
Repeat for the other 3 corners.

Step 12: Step 12: Sew Your Corners

Sew corner, matching the cut edge up the guideline for 5/8".
Whenever you start and stop sewing a seam you have to backstitch to tie your knot.
Repeat for all 4 corners.

Step 13: Step 13: Turn Pouch Right Side Out and Pin Opening in Lining

Find your opening in your lining.
Turn your pouch right side out through the opening, just like you would turn a sock right side out.
Once the lining is turned right side out, pull the outside fabric right side out through the open zipper.
Find your opening in you lining, pin shut making sure that the cut edges are folded towards the inside of the pouch and are not visible.
