That's pretty! Here's my (uglier) backyard compost idea:
I had a tree cut down, but it is of a kind that produces a lot of creosote when burned, so I decided to try to find other uses for it -thus the compost bin.
The bin is filled with wood-chips, leaves and ivy plants/roots and it will all (hopefully) be decomposed by next summer -so we can plant some grass with it.
I have added some fertilizer to speed it up. The only downside is that all the neat holes in the "wall" could be very inviting for snakes, but we'll see.

Adding Nitrogen will help speed up the decomposition of Carbon rich (wood & leaf) materials.

Composting is an aerobic process; this means it needs oxygen. it's recommended you provide air infiltration (or stir it regularly) if the pile is over 3-4' across. I've seen people use a stand pipe of perforated 4 in drainage pipe to allow air to get into the center of the pile. Two 8 ft lengths laid through the center in n X from one side to the other, about halfway up, with the ends sticking out between the ties would give you 4 quarters about 4 foot square. This should give you the needed airflow.

Looks great and simple! How do you access the compost?
