Like a regular Ebenezer Scrooge, it pains me to offer up this treasured and secret recipe but, in the spirit of the holidays, I find my want to spread joy and cheer more powerful than my desire to eat these cookies all by myself.
If these pictures don't capture your interest, you'll just have to trust me, these things are incredibly delicious, easy to make and a delight to share. Moreover, they take maybe 10 minutes to prepare from start to finish and only require 4 ingredients. Give it a shot, and let me know what you think.
There's 3 reasons I never wanted to share this before, and I think they're all pretty valid:
- This recipe is dead simple... so, everyone will now know that I am not a master chef, nor have I ever really slaved over a hot stove to produce these little treats
- To write this instructable, I had to make a batch of these little wonders... and that means I have a batch in the house... calling to me... begging me to eat them... and, let me warn you, these things are addictive.
- In all seriousness, I acquired this recipe from my great aunt who used to make these at holiday parties when I was a wee little chap, running circles around the cookie tray and snatching them up with each pass. I really don't know the origins so claim no ownership.
Alright, lets get to it!
Step 1: Ingredients and Stuff
You only need 4 ingredients:
- 6 ounces of semisweet chocolate chips
- 6 ounces of butterscotch chips
- 3 ounces of chow mein noodles
- Don't get the "real" and fresh chow mein noodles... you're looking for the crispy ones (see link or picture.)
- 1 can (200 grams) of salted peanuts
- For some reason, salted peanuts are crazy expensive on amazon, so you should probably visit your local grocery store.
- A kitchen scale
- Or just eye ball it ;)
- A double boiler
- Or just boil some water and float a bowl in it... but be careful!
- A microwave might also work, but I don't have one so can't confirm.
Step 2: Process
- Combine the chocolate and butterscotch chips
- Using whatever method serves you best, melt them (I used a makeshift double boiler by boiling water in a large pot, removing the pot from the stove and placing a metal bowl with the chocolate chips over the pot.)
- Stir the chips until they're melted
- Once melted, pour in the chow mein and salted peanuts.
- Mix it all up and don't worry if the chow mein noodles break.
- Using a couple of spoons, spoon some of the mixture into one spoon and slide it off that spoon with another spoon and onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper
- Once all the mixture has been spooned out into little blobs, pop them in the fridge or freezer until they're solid
- Remove them from the fridge / freezer and you're done.
Step 3: Conclusion
Try not to eat too many at once...
These things are so simple and such a crowd pleaser it's almost comical. I've won cookie contests with them and earned a reputation as some home cook wizard. They're a hit at any family function or holiday get together, and they keep, so whip some up and keep them handy in the freezer for those spur of the moment events (or midnight cravings).

P.s. I am trying to enter this instructable in the baking contest as the requirements state that the contest is open to "Any dish that's prepared in the oven." Technically, you could prepare this in the oven, but it would be uncomfortable doing all that stirring on your knees and hunched over down there...
