I bought a new house and wanted to turn one of the spare bedrooms into a game room, but I didn't want to lose space. I ended up turning the closet into a long computer desk.
I removed the doors and frame from the top of the doorway.
I used long pieces of 1x2s and screwed them along the wall horizontally to hold up the desk. I didn't want any visible legs. Then I cut plywood to fit, once the wall was lined with the 1x2s it was a simple process of lying the plywood on top and screwing it down.
I got fake wood flooring from a home supply thrift store (habitat for humanity store). It was a laminate floring that looked like wood planks. Cost about $7 for a big box. I started lying them down on the top of the desk to make the desk surface.
I then got some small wood molding from the same store, cost about $2 and lined the front edges of the desk to hide the rest of the plywood.
After i was all don't i got a doorknob drill bit and cut multiple holes for wires.
I had the cable company come out and install another cable jack in the closet under the desk. the guy looked at me like i was an idiot. I then used the existing outlets on the other side of the wall and turned one around and spliced the other to add power below the desk.
The finished project left me with enough room for my wife and I for both our computers along with tons of extra room for just hanging out.
