Cutting Tools 2 (herramientas De Corte 2)

Luego de haber pasado una semana con algo parecido a una gripe, me decidí a aprovechar el día soleado y templado, encendiendo la fragua para hacer el primer trabajo real con ella.

Como decía en otro instructable, me propongo aprovechar unos trozos de pista de rulemán que guardé hace un tiempo. Lo que me motiva a hacer estas cosas no es el afán de ahorrar dinero ni la imposibilidad de comprar buenas herramientas a precio razonable. Es simplemente que tengo ganas de experimentar.

After spending a week with something like the flu, I decided to seize the sunny and warm day, turning the furnace to make the first real work with it.

As I said in other instructable, I intend to use race pieces of a ball bearing that I saved some time ago. What motivates me to do these things is not the desire to save money or the inability to buy good tools at reasonable prices. It's just that I have wanted to experiment.

Step 1: Firing (encendiendo)

Ningún problema. En un momento pareció haberse apagado el trozo de papel, pero luego de varios segundos de darle aire moderado se escuchó el siseo inconfundible del fuego incipiente.


No problem. At one point it seemed to have turned off the piece of paper, but after a few seconds of giving moderate air, was heard the unmistakable hiss of incipient fire.

Step 2: Poniendo Las Piezas (putting the Pieces)

Una vez encendidas las brasas hice una especie de cuna entre ellas, coloqué los dos trozos de rulemán y los cubrí superficialmente con carbón.


Once the embers lit, I did a sort of craddle between them, put the two pieces of ball-bearing and covered them superficially with coal.

Step 3: Martillando (hammering)

Al alcanzar las piezas el color rojo, las saqué y las enderecé sobre mi yunque con el martillo chico. Tuve que hacer esta tarea en dos o tres etapas, dado que por mi impericia las piezas se enfriaban antes de tener tiempo de enderezarlas.


Upon the parts reaching red, I took them and straightened over my anvil with the little hammer. I had to do this task in two or three stages because of my inexperience the parts cooled before I had time to straighten them.

Step 4: Endureciendo (hardening)

Una vez enderezadas aceptablemente las piezas, les hice un shock térmico para devolverles la dureza: las volví a calentar al rojo y las sumergí rápidamente en agua a temperatura ambiente.

Acá empieza la parte delicada: me excedí en el shock y quedaron sumamente duras (la lima no les entra) pero también muy quebradizas. Tendré que ver cuál es el punto de dureza que más me conviene, porque no siendo el filo muy agudo, es probable que sirvan así como están. Si veo que al usarlas no duran lo esperado, trataré de ir ablandándolas de a poco mediante calentamiento y enfriamiento lento, hasta obtener una dureza conveniente.


Once acceptably straightened the parts, I made them a heat shock (quench) to restore their strength: turned to heat them red and quickly immersed in water at environment temperature.

Here begins the tricky part: I went too far in shock and they were very hard (the file does not wear them) but also very brittle. I'll have to see what is the best point of hardness for me, because not being the edges too acute, is likely to serve as they are. If using them I see do not last as expected, I will try to do them softer, by heating and slow cooling to obtain a suitable hardness.

Step 5: Afilando (sharpening)

Como dije en el paso anterior, trataré de usar estos trozos de acero tal como están. El próximo paso es darles filo. La amoladora de banco me dice a gritos que este es acero duro, no como los que ella está acostumbrada a gastar.


As I said in the previous step, I will try to use these steel pieces as they are. The next step is to give them the edge. The bench grinder cries, tells me that this is hard steel, not like it is accustomed to wear.

Step 6: Agregando Un Mango (adding a Handle)

Dado que por el momento es prematuro abrir juicio acerca de la utilidad de estas herramientas, les soldaré simplemente un trozo de varilla de hierro dulce de 1/8 x 1/2 pulgada, una herramienta en cada extremo. Si demuestran merecerlo, más adelante les haré un mango "como la gente" (o mejor, si es posible).


Because at the moment is premature to view on the usefulness of these tools, we will weld just a piece of soft iron rod 1/8 x 1/2 inch, a tool at each end. If they show deserve, later I will make a handle "as people" (or better, if possible).

Step 7: Asentando (seating?)

Este es el paso más largo, dado que al ser tan duro el acero, cada filo requiere muchos minutos de minucioso tratamiento con la piedra de asentar. Este paso es iterativo con el paso 5, porque al asentar uno pone más atención a la forma de los filos, lo cual obliga a retocarlos con la amoladora.


This is the longest step, because being steel so hard, each edge requires several minutes of careful treatment with seating stone. This step is iterative with step 5, because during the seat you put more attention to the shape of the edges, which requires a touch up with the grinder.

Step 8: Probando (testing)

Perdón por la calidad del video, un poco es debido a que la cámara no es gran cosa y otra a que tengo que sostenerla con una mano mientras con la otra trato de usar la herramienta.
