Introduction: Ex-Boyfriend's Severed Finger Cupcackes in a Pool of Blood
This Halloween Instructable will give you a tutorial on how to make modeling chocolate, which is what I used to make the severed fingers. In my previous instructable, I made candy rimmed vampire glasses and used the same technique for the pool-of-blood. You can check them out here: http://bit.ly/olbEHU
These severed finger cupcakes not only look super gross, in a good way, but they taste great too! Bring them to your office Halloween party, or your next potluck. They are sure to be a big hit!

Step 1: Ingredients
1 box of cake mix- I used chocolate
1 container vanilla frosting
Light Corn Syrup
1 14/oz bag White Candy Melts
Red Gel Paste
SILPAT or Parchment Paper
Step 2: Make the Modeling White Chocolate
To make the modeling chocolate:
Create a double boiler by placing a metal bowl over a pot of simmering water. Turn heat on stove to medium low or low. You don't want to burn the chocolate. Next, add the bag of candy melts. Stir the chocolate until it becomes smooth and no chunks remain. Remove from heat and let cool for a couple of minutes.
Next, add four tablespoons of corn syrup to the slightly cooled white chocolate. Stir until the mixture stiffens and resembles a hard ball. Place mixture into a zip-lock bag and place in refrigerator for one hour or until firm.
Step 3: Make Candy for Pool of Blood
To make the candy for the pool of blood, add the following ingredients into a pot on the stove and stir until combined.
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1/2 cup water
Next, turn stove to medium heat.
Add the candy thermometer to the pot. Do not stir mixture. When temperature on thermometer reaches 300 degrees F, add 1 teaspoon of red gel paste and turn heat low until red color incorporates throughout the mixture.
Remove mixture from heat and using a heat proof spatula, drizzle candy onto silpat or parchment paper in a circular motion. You don't want the patterns to be too uniform.
Set aside to cool.
Step 4: Make the Severed Fingers
To make the severed fingers, remove the modeling chocolate from the refrigerator. * My chocolate was a little to firm, so I stuck it in the microwave on power 5 for 30 sec to soften it a bit.
Spray clean work space with cooking spray or oil so chocolate does not stick. Start to knead the chocolate until it becomes pliable. Remove a small piece of chocolate and begin to hand form it until it resembles a finger. Using the long end of the spoon, gently make an indentation at the top of the finger, where the finger nail will be placed. Using a small piece of chocolate, hand form a nail to place onto the finger and set aside. Using a tooth pick, make small indentations onto the top and lower part of the fingers, to give them a realistic look.
Once you have created desired amount of fingers, using a toothpick dipped into the red gel paste, dap onto indentation of finger and place nail on top to adhere. Dip the toothpick into the paste again and place randomly over finger to create spattered blood effect. Make sure you place some blood onto the end of the finger, where it has been cut off.
Set fingers aside until you are ready to assemble cupcakes.
Step 5: Make the Cupcakes
To make the cupcakes, bake according to instructions on box, or make batter from scratch. I used a cake mix of dark chocolate to help off-set white chocolate & vanilla frosting.
Set aside to cool.
Step 6: Assemble the Cupcakes
To assemble the cooled cupcakes, frost with desired flavor of frosting. I used vanilla. Next, carefully remove a piece of candy blood from silpat and place onto frosted cupcake. Place a severed finger on top of pool-of-blood. Dap some red gel paste onto pool-of-blood to match color on severed fingers. Repeat until no fingers remain.
