Welcome to another How to Origami tutorial! This Instructable will teach you how to make the super fun and easy origami fortune teller. This tutorial also contains a segment that will teach you how to use this model to tell your friends their fortune! Step 1: Fold in Half Both Ways

Use a square of paper that has a light color or a white side. This is necessary because we will need to write on the paper at the end. Start by folding the paper in half both ways, so that there is a crease running vertically and horizontally. Unfold completely.

Step 2: Fold in Both Diagonals

Fold corner to corner to create a diagonal crease. Unfold and then fold corner to corner the other way so that both diagonals are made. Unfold completely. Orient so that the light color or white side is face down.

Step 3: Fold in Corners 1

Take each of the four corners of the paper and fold them into the center point (where all the lines cross). Once this is done your paper should look like the second image. Then flip the model over.

Step 4: Fold in Corners 2

Fold the corners into the center point as in the previous step. Make sure these are strong creases. Flip the model over again. The result (after flipping over) should look like the third image above.

Step 5: Open the Pockets

Begin by pinching the corners of the model to open the pockets. You may need to insert a finger into the pocket to keep it open while you work on the next one. Once all the pockets are open the fortune teller should look like the second image. To operate the fortune teller, insert a finger into each pocket.

Step 6: Set Up Fortune Teller

This is the method that I used to use. There are many ways to do this and feel free to create your own method! To use the method I know, start by writing a color on each of the four exterior flaps as shown in the first image. Then open the fortune teller back up and flatten it out. Turn it to the side that does not have the colors written on it and write the numbers 1 through 8 clockwise as shown in the second image. Under each of the numbers, write a message or fortune as shown in the third image. You will have to lift a flap in order to write the message.

Step 7: Using the Fortune Teller

To use the fortune teller, begin by asking someone to choose one of the four colors. If, for example, the individual chooses "Black, " open the fortune teller 5 times for each of the letters in the word "black." Alternate between opening the fortune teller from up and down to left and right. After opening the fortune teller five times as described, 4 numbers on the inside should be visible. Ask the individual to choose one of the 4 displayed numbers. As before, open the fortune teller the number of times corresponding to the number the individual chose. When you are done, the same set of 4 or a new set of 4 numbers will be visible. Ask the individual to choose a number again. This time, lift the flap to expose the hidden message under the selected number. Read the fortune out loud.
