Introduction: The Stilts-Styled Quail House

Quail is a collective name for several genus of mid-sized birds generally considered in the order Galliformes. The egg is well known foodstuff.

The Stilts Styled Quail House is designed considering environmental protection and breeding efficiency. It is designed for easily attaching extensions and cost effective.

The quail house is stilts styled. By the stilts styled design, it can easily  be placed at slope or uneven terrain. The cage is located at height of human being's breast. Quail are walking around at height of human being's breast. So, breeders can easily watch the condition of quail, without stooping. By walking under the cage of the quail house, the breeders can easily move to opposite side of the quail house.

Many birds cages are manufactured with plastic or aluminum for research and development of mass production technology, but this stilts styled quail house uses timber for easily incineration. So It is suited for not only in house garden but also school or primeval forest. It looks like Japanese shrine architecture, so it may be suited for shrine or temple also.

Generally, keeping clean of the cage is necessary for quail. The quail house is designed considering cleaning efficiency. The internal space is divided by a partition, so two areas are in the space of the quail house. The floor boards are laid in each areas. Moving the quail to another area, and cleaning one side's floor, and after that you can clean another side's floor. If you set the center partition board full time, two varieties can be kept on the quail house, but it is usually used for one type quail.

The quail house is stilts styled but tiger cats can easily ride on the roof. On the roof or the ground, cats can perseveringly wait for hunting chance at gaps of the cage. When quail are walking near the front panel of the cage, unfortunately quail may be caught by cats sometimes. With duplicating the front panel, the risk can be reduced, but if there is no cats, it's meaningless. So I will offer two types of the quail house, anti cat's attack version or normal version. If there is no cats in your garden, normal version is recommended.

The shape of roof part of the quail house is Right-angled triangle. Because of right angle of the top of the roof, material of roof board can be easily replaced. Understanding of elementary geometric is required for constructing this house, so it can be used for mathematical education for Junior High School Students as a teaching material.

This stilts styled quail house is designed as quail house, but it can be use for any other birds, cat or mouse. But this is too small to use as a hen house except for bantam.

Step 1: Lumbers for Mainframe

At first, please check out lumber as material. The 8 types of lumber are needed to build the quail house. Each size of the lumber is like below.

1. (1800x40x30)x4
2. (740x40x30)x14
3. (720x40x30)x12
4. (320x40x30)x20
5. (452.5x40x30)x8
6. (724x40x30)x3
7. (314x40x30)x3
8. (350x40x30)x6

Type 5 have to be cut to trapezium from rectangle. The size of one side is 372.5, and opposite side size is 452.5.
Type 6 have to be cut to Right-angled trapezium from rectangle. The size of one side is 724, and opposite side size is 624.492.
Type 7 have to be cut to Right-angled trapezium from rectangle. The size of one side is 314, and opposite side size is 265.345.

Surely many timbers are useful, but red pine or Japanese cedar is suited for that. For example, at Kahma Home Center of Japana(http://www.kahma.co.jp), a Redpine lumber (4000x40x30)'s price is \368 which is $3.6, it's very cost effective. If you use the Redpine lumber whose size is(4000x40x30), the total cost of lumber is \4784 which is $47.8.

(4000x40x30)x2 --> (1800x40x30)x4
(4000x40x30)x3 --> (740x40x30)x14
(4000x40x30)x3 --> (720x40x30)x12
(4000x40x30)x2 --> (320x40x30)x20
(4000x40x30)x1 --> (372.5x40x30x452.5)x8
(4000x40x30)x1 --> (724x40x30x624.492)x3,(314x40x30x265.345)x3
(4000x40x30)x1 --> (350x40x30)x6

Step 2: Gluing Each Lumbers for Mainframe

The 4 pieces of the type1 lumber, 8 pieces of the type2 lumber and 8 pieces of the type3 lumber are needed for building mainframe of the quail house.

1. (1800x40x30)x4
2. (740x40x30)x8
3. (720x40x30)x8

To build mainframe, each lumbers have to be adhered with wood glue.

Step 3: Gluing Lumber for Roof Frame and Stiffener

Type 5 lumber have to be cut to trapezium from rectangle. The size of one side is 372.5, and opposite side size is 452.5. This is used as stiffener for bottommost parallel column.

Type 6 lumber have to be cut to Right-angled trapezium from rectangle. The size of one side is 724, and opposite side size is 624.492.
Type 7 lumber have to be cut to Right-angled trapezium from rectangle. The size of one side is 314, and opposite side size is 265.345.

Type 6 and 7 lumbers are used for roof frame. The top of the root have to be right angled.

Step 4: Gluing Lumber for Lattice Stiffener

Type 2 lumber is needed for constructing lattice stiffener. The size of Type2 lumber is 740x40x30, so three rectangle grooves  should be carved per lumber for lattice, the hollow's size should be 20x30x30.

After constructing the lattice, adapt it to the rectangle of bottommost parallel column of the main frame.

Step 5: Fit the Vertical Columns

Type4 lumbers are used for vertical columns of the cage of the quail house. Glue the lumbers according to the periodic interval.

Step 6: Cutting Plain Board

Plain boards are needed for the roof, the floor and the center partition of the quail house.

For example, at Kahma Home Center of Japana(http://www.kahma.co.jp), the price of 1820x910x2.5 sized veneers board is \398 which is $3.9. It is cost effective.

The (724x800x2.5) and (354x800x2.5) is needed as roof boards.
The two (354x724x2.5) sized boards are needed as roof side panel.
The two (739x400x2.5) sized boards are  needed as floor boards.
The (319x800x2.5) sized board is needed as a center partition board.

The two (354x724x2.5) sized rectangle board have to be cut to right-angled triangle by diagonal cutting.

Step 7: Building Floor Board

At first, carve a square groove whose size is (20x30x30) at the center of the two (740x40x30) sized lumbers to combine as a cross. And after that, adapt the 740x740 sized cross to the second parallel column from the bottom.

On the (739x400x2.5) sized veneer board, (739x9x14) and (380x9x14) sized edges have to be added.

Step 8: Gluing Side Panel of Roof and Stiffener

The diagonal cut (354x724x2.5) sized right-angled triangle boards have to be glued to the sides of the roof.

The 6 pieces of (350x40x30) lumbers are used as stiffener of roof frame. After adhering the roof-side panels, they have to be adjusted.

Step 9: Construction of Center Partition Rail

The small sized lumbers are needed for building Center Partition Rail. With the four (800x9x14) sized ones and (292x9x14) sized ones, the two 800x320 rectanglehave to be created on the center of the cage of the quail house.

After establishing the rail, with 800x319x2.5 veneer board, check out the function of center parttiion board.

Step 10: Construction of Front Panel

For construction of front panel, 8 pieces of 9x24x319 sized lumbers, 8 pieces of 9x23x134 sized lumbers, 4 pieces of 9x24x180 sized lumbers, and 12 pieces of 9x9x271 sized lumbers are needed per front panel.

To build 2 Door anti cat's attack version, four front panels are needed.
To build 1 Door anti cat's attack version or 2 Door normal version, two front panels have to be created.
To build 1 Door normal version, only a front panels have to be created.

Surely many timbers are useful, but ezo pine or Japanese cedar is suited for that. For example, at Kahma Home Center of Japana(http://www.kahma.co.jp), a (9x24x910) sized Ezopine lumber's price is \148 which is $1.4, a (9x9x910) sized Ezopine lumber's price is \88 which is $0.88, it's very cost effective. If you use the Ezopine lumber whose size is(9x24x910),

Two (9x24x319) and two (9x24x134) can be obtained from a (9x24x910)lumber, Four (9x24x180) sized lumbers can be obtained from it, then five (9x24x910) lumbers are needed for a front panel. And 3 (9x9x271) sized lumbers can be obtained from a (9x9x910) sized Ezopine lumbers, so four (9x9x910) sized Ezopine lumbers is needed for a front panel.

Two Japanese Hinges, two normal hinge and a Uchikake are needed per front panel. At the shop, the cost of them is \996 + \376 + \498. Total cost of a front panel is \2962 which is $29.6.

Step 11: Nailing and Putting Roof

After construction of the quail house with Wood Glue, nailing with brass nail.

Step 12: Material Expense Example Without Manufacturing Cost and Overhead

For example, to build 2 Door anti cat's attack version, the material expense is \18978 which is $189.7.
To build 1 Door anti cat's attack version, the material expense is \15290 which is $152.9.
To build 2 Door normal version, the material expense is \14042 which is $140.
To build 1 Door normal version, the material expense is \11700 which is $117.
