Introduction: The Voronoi LED Desk Lamp

In this instructable, I show you how to design a unique Voronoi LED lamp.

I started this project because I wanted to make a lamp as a Christmas present for my wife.
I've always liked designs that seem to blend nature and technology and that's why I chose to integrate a Voronoi pattern in the design.

The video will show you how to easily create a voronoi pattern into an STL file for a 3D print.

Step 1: Watch the Video

Get your materials.

You will need a lamp base, LED bulb, a power cord, RTV, super glue and PLA for your printer.

You can use any base. Just measure its height and diameter and adjust your print if needed.

The base I used in the photo here was 36.5 mm high and 115 mm in diameter.

Step 2: Design Phase

See this section to learn how it was designed.

I used Fusion 360 to model the parts.

Sketch the outline of the housing from the dimensions you took earlier.

Revolve that pattern to make your 3D shape and export your STL file.

Step 3: Design the Cylinder

The diameter of the cylinder comes from the previous step. The cylinder needs to sit just inside the base you previously designed. You can pick any height you want. I used 149 mm because of the limitations of my printer.

Export the STL file of your cylinder and go to Voronator.com.

Upload your file there and it will generate the Voronoi shape for you.

Download your voronoi file and load it in 3D builder.

In 3D builder, you cut off the bottom of the cylinder because you don't need it.

Slice the top off and save it and the cylinder as two separate STL files for printing.

Step 4: Get Your Files and Print

Printing details are covered here.

I used 1.75 mm PLA

Layer height 0.20 mm

Infill for the base was set to 15%

Infill for all other parts was set to 100%

The defuser cylinder was printed in vase mode.

If you can, print all your parts on the same printer. Since the parts need to fit together afterwords, this makes calibration between printers irrelevant.

Download your STL files.

Step 5: Wiring Instructions.

See the video here for wiring instructions.

A schematic is not needed.

The wiring is very simple. There is only one wire for each connection terminal. Attach one wire to each terminal as you see in the picture above.

Step 6: Assemble the Parts

Here is the video for the assembly section.

The parts are made to slide together like you see here.

This is why you want both parts printed on the same printer if you can.

Step 7: You Did It.

Now enjoy your new lamp! And if you would like to find out how to make the Memory Falcon you see sitting on top of the lamp, click here.
