Do you mean the locks that are built into lockers? I'm curious about those myself. I haven't had access to any to experiment with them, nor have I found any info online about them. If you ever figure anything out about them, let me know.

You don't need to know the first and second digit (though it does make it easier). The general idea is you can almost definitely determine the last digit. Then (because of reasons) there are only a few possible combinations of 1st and 2nd digits you can have (64). This is a short enough list that you can go through them without needing haircut part way through.
I've always been intrigued by safe cracking. I once listened to two guys get into an argument about how similar the mechanisms of combination padlocks and combination safes are. I didn't know enough about safes to chime in, but it was the first thing that got me thinking about safes. I'm curious, was a lot of your Uncle's training from a mentor who trained him, or are their particular locksmith schools one goes to? I've always been curious.I second you on the whole "don't use combo locks for things you want to keep safe" maxim.

Safes have different guts than master locks. Even some of the lockers I've seen that have built in combination locks don't have the same internals as what I described. You'll have to find some cranky old wizard who used to be a safe specialist.
