When you are fishing the noodles you pull the line up by hand. If you have a fish on then you net him, take him off the hook, and throw him in the live well or ice chest. Then you can remove the weight (if you're done fishing) and wind the line back on the spool by hand.I've had my noodles for several years now... no deterioration. No clue how long they will last but I bet a long time.Would love to see some pictures of your noodles once you've made them! Thanks!SW

I would think that you'd end up with a tangled mess honestly. Especially when you hooked a fish. To do what you are talking about I'd go with a trotline instead.

Retirement is awesome. I love being retired. Every day that I get up I can decide what I want to do. I was born to be retired!
View Instructable »I really like this method but there are, in my opinion, 3 keys to success. The first one occurs at 2:40 where he says something about this part being the secret sauce. Make sure that when you make the transfer of the weights from the back to the front that they are at a higher level than the other half of the weights. The second key is to watch his throwing arm motion. It is circular… sweeping from behind and then across in front. This slinging motion imparts a bit of rotation to the net and helps it open up. And the last is to hold onto the lead line with your left hand just a second or so longer like he says. This alos helps the net to open fully.

Thank you!Yes... it is the numerous little details that you pay attention to that make all the difference.
Absolutely. A leather carry strap is definitely on my to do list. Thanks!
View Instructable »Ha... yes, it is quite heavy. About 4 pounds. It would not be my first choice to take on a backpacking trip for sure. You don't have to be off by much when you are cutting the angles on the staves for it to make a difference. The error compounds with each stave when you roll up the octagonal blank and the joints won't match very well. The router bit is kind of the no-brainer approach. It's pretty much automatic. I'll sacrifice a little material to guarantee I get good results. As far as saving time is concerned... I'm retired! Go check out my Tessellated Backyard Grill instructable and you'll see that I'll do crazy stuff even though it means it will take a long time.

Ah... sorry, just saw this.I plan to varnish and sand the top many times. The idea will be to build up the varnish in the grooves between the tiles. But you're right... they need to get filled some way.For the inner circle and edges I would cut a whole lizard, set it in place, and mark the overlap on the bottom of the tile. Then I would cut it on the scroll saw. I'd keep the leftover pieces in a parts bucket and tried to use them in other locations. It didn't work out perfectly... I had a lot of leftover pieces left in the parts bucket when I was done. Thanks for the comment on the joinery... I love doing that kind of stuff.

View Instructable »Thanks! Well... since I use the grill so much it spends most of the time on the back porch... which is covered... but I guess still not protected enough. I'll probably be keeping this new grill in the garage a lot more so I'll bet that will help tremendously.

The inner coil was 140 ohms and the outer coil was 270 ohms. It's not super critical to hit these numbers exactly. What is important is to have the coils wrapped in the same direction and to ensure that all of the polarities are wired correctly.

Thanks Joe... appreciate the comments. Yeah... cherry would be beautiful. Post a picture of it here when you finish!
Plant stand? Interesting thought. Just thinking out loud here but if you were going to scale up the design and put something heavy in it I would make the mortises in the top piece deeper to make that joint stronger. I like the idea. Heck, get a round piece of glass and scale this thing up to make a neat end table. Thanks for the comment!
Thank you! That makes me feel really good.I took a look at the different dog bowl stands on Etsy. You might be right. Mine is quite different than most of what I see there. The prices vary widely. I curious how much I could charge for my design.

Ummm.... I'm not real familiar with how pickups are wired but my gut feel is that they wouldn't work. Honestly, wrapping the coil like I've shown is not that big of a deal. The meticulous/tedious part of this project has been cutting out the gears!
- Sawdust Willy commented on Sawdust Willy's instructable Electromagnetic PendulumView Instructable »
Oh my gosh... that is so bad it's hilarious.Hang in there maybe we can do this together. I've got a high level of confidence that we'll get there. I think the hardest part is getting the pendulum to work and that part is done. Next up we'll talk about gear design. The gears I chose were involute gears. Not that hard to do. I've got a lot going on this month so maybe in October I'll have a tutorial on those.

Ah... makes sense. Cool.Yeah, I hooked the circuit up to an oscilloscope once and monitored the current in the output loop. It definitely triggered as the pendulum passed in both directions. I wish I would have saved the waveform and printed it out to be able to evaluate the timing a bit more. Regardless... this simple little thing fascinates the heck out of me.Thanks!

Thank you! Appreciate the feedback and kind words.
Ah... thanks for the comments. The transistor is turned on by the current induced in the input coil by the neodymium magnet as it swings by and not the dc power source so using a Ge transistor won't affect power consumption in the manner you described. Besides I wanted to use materials that are readily available to keep the project well within reach of most folks. Also, I played around with the coil and various voltage levels to see what worked really well with the magnet. 9 volts was the winner. And today's batteries have a fairly flat curve over the majority of their lifespan so I'm not worried about an inconsistant amplitude as the battery discharges. You are correct that you get better results with smaller pendulum amplitudes in a typical clock design though this is not a typical …

Thanks. Oh... Most of the work was done over a year or so of working on the weekends but I still continue to play with it. I've recently changed the arbor and converted it into a rainwater collection system with a solar powered water pump to use for gardening. I grow Red Savina habanero peppers that I make into a really good fermented hot sauce.

If you are referring to the entire project I talk about that in the "Supplies" section. I'm estimating around $5000. I did some digging around on the internet and I'm seeing a rule of thumb of around 23 to 25 dollars per square foot... but that's going to vary quite a bit depending on materials you choose. At $5000 and 224 square feet my shed is a little over $22 per square foot so that sounds about right. That's for pier and beam foundation, composite roof, and wood construction. I also built the front door and windows from scratch so that was much less expensive than buying them.

Yes the nails do poke through the sheathing a little on mine. Different lengths are available. You might go with the 3/4 inch nails to avoid them going all the way through. I used the roofing nails with the big plastic cap on them.
View Instructable »The blocks are made out of concrete. I dug down about a foot and a half or so and built wooden forms over the hole. Depending on where you live you might have to dig deeper to avoid frost heaving. I mixed up the concrete in a wheelbarrow and shoveled into the hole. Before the concrete set I embedded 1/4 inch bolts. You drill holes in the beams to match the bolt locations and set the beam in place. Then you place washers and nuts on the bolts and tighten them down to secure the beam.

Thank you brother. Yes, I have seen the ones with the rebar but it's like you say... you have to use a longer piece of PVC pipe. I was shooting for light and compact so I decided against the tipping version. It is a cool idea though.Hey... would love to see some pics when you build yours! Thanks again.

Ha. You got it. The door was fun but I kind of worked it out as I went along so no time for the camera. I should have taken pictures as it would have made a good presentation by itself. The corners of the door were half lap joinery and I pegged the joint with two 1 inch diameter wooden dowels and glued with West Systems epoxy thickened with saw dust. The interior framing that holds the glass was a bit complicated. I'm getting close to where I need to re-varnish the door so maybe I can get a few shots to post when I do that. Thanks for the comment!
