See, I did see mention that it is naturally sourced (along with emery), but it just seems crazy to me that garnet crystals can't be grown. Maybe it isn't economical because garnet is so prevelant.

Generally I just go a size down for my pilot holes. I just want to clear enough material so that I won't stress the wood and split it.

I know! It's ridiculous! But, well, for some applications you will pay more for their longevity.

About using motor oil, from Wikipedia:"Motor oils have a slightly complicated relationship to machine tools. Straight-weight non-detergent motor oils are usable, and in fact SAE 10 and 20 oils used to be the recommended spindle and way oils (respectively) on manual machine tools decades ago, although nowadays dedicated way oil formulas prevail in commercial machining. While nearly all motor oils can act as adequate cutting fluids in terms of their cutting performance alone, modern multi-weight motor oils with detergents and other additives are best avoided. These additives can present a copper-corrosion concern to brass and bronze, which machine tools often have in their bearings and leadscrew nuts (especially older or manual machine tools)."

As @petercd points out, you can get better results with high water pressure! The water pressure we have in the garden is strong enough that I don't need it, even in packed clay. But, if you don't have good water pressure, a hose attachment that ups the pressure into a thin, tight stream will make this go faster for you.

I wish I had known this at the beginning of the project. I don't have much experience with working with metal and drilling the holes was a huge headache.

This is really cute. I think I'll make this with my girls.

It's really dead simple to build, actually. For this type of dome, there are two lengths of pipe you cut, and all connections are with a single bolt. It's insanely strong, too. We've had a dozen kids on it at once and it didn't budge.
