3-in-1 Jewellery Organiser From Old Frame

Do you have lots of jewellery, but don't have a way to organise it? If so, this is the instructable for you! I found that I was rarely wearing my jewellery, beacuse it was all tangled up in a small box, and I would forget about it every day. So I decided to make a jewellery display and organiser from an old frame I had. I wanted a different section for each type of jewellery I own: bracelets, necklaces and earrings, so this organiser is split into three parts. I hope you enjoy this instructable and find it helpful!

Step 1: What You Will Need

You will need a good few supplies for this project, but they are all common items and you will have most or all of them at home.

1. An old frame. Choose a size large enough to display all of your jewellery.

2. Acrylic paint(s)

3. Sellotape

4. Scissors

5. Xacto knife and cutting board

6. Ruler

7. Pencil

8. Paintbrush

9. Pushpins

10. Small piece of tulle/ netting

11. Patterned paper

You will also need a glue gun and glue sticks (not shown in image)

Step 2: Remove the Backing

Open up the back of your frame and remove the plastic/glass sheet and the cardboard. Do not discard the cardboard. If there is no cardboard insert, measure the plastic insert and cut a piece the same size out of cardboard.

Step 3: Sort Out Your Jewellery

Take all of your jewellery together and lay it out on the cardboard. Keep in mind that the outer edge of the cardboard will be covered by the frame. Decide where everything is going to go. Roughly make markings to where you would like your three (or more) sections. Remember that you should always mark on the back, and when you turn it around, the sections will be on the opposite side.

Step 4: Measure Out Sections

Place your cardboard into the frame and draw aound the edge where the sides are cut off by the frame. Next, use your markings from the previous step to measure out the sections properly, with a pencil and ruler. Ensure that they are even and straight. Use an Xacto knife, cutting mat and ruler to cut out the section where you want your earrings to go, leaving the thin edge to go under the frame.

Step 5: Cutting the Paper

Take your first piece of patterned paper and lay it under your cardboard. Mark out the paper so that it covers your first section (necklaces for me), with about a 1/2 inch tab to fold under the edges. Also leave a 1/2 inch overlapping onto the next section on the front (see image 4). This will be covered by the next section later.Cut out around your markings using an Xacto knife. Fold the extra paper onto the back and tape into place. Finally, repeat the same method with your second pattered paper, except do not overlap onto the next section on the front. Place your piece into the frame to see how it looks.

Step 6: Attaching the Netting

Cut a small piece of tulle or netting to cover your earrings section, with excess for gluing down. Glue the edges down with a hot glue gun, making sure to pull it as taut as possible. Use small pegs to keep in place until dry.

Step 7: Painting

This step is optional, but I chose to paint my frame in a mint green colour to tie in with the colours in my patterned papers. You can then coat the frame in a layer of mod podge or top coat to seal it, if you have it. For the bracelet holders, I used the inside of a ribbon spool and cut it in half. Use whatever you have, but I would not recommend a toilet roll tube as they are too large and thin. I then painted these in the same colour and cut two cardboard hexagons to glue gun on top, which will stop the bracelets sliding off.

Step 8: Attaching the Push Pins

Now that the other sections are complete, it is time to attach the pushpins for your necklaces to hang from. Measure out the number you would like, evenly accros the top of the section. If you are using round ones like me, push them a small way through, then cover in hot glue on the back. The nacklaces willbe hung from the metal part of the pin. If you are using standard pushpins, you will be hanging the necklace from the plastic part, so push the pin all the way through and cover with hot glue at the back.

Step 9: Adding a Small Box (optional)

Finally, I decided to add a small box at the bottom of the frame to store small pieces from an alphabet necklace I had and other bits and bobs. You could also use this for rings. I used an old box I had and covered the inside in matching paper. You could make a small box out of cardboard yourself, either. I then hot glued it to the bottom of the frame.

Step 10: Organise Your Jewellery!

And you're done! All that's left to do it hang your necklaces from the pins, your bracelets from the spools and your earrings from the netting. Enjoy being organised!
