Introduction: All Natural Diy Hair Styling Pomade

About: Hey. I'm Roman! Here on instructables I'm only really active during the summer when I have school off and not so much during the school year due to going to school, school work haunting me when I'm not at scho…

Recently I've been really into hairstyling so I've been trying out a whole lot of different hair products and don't get me wrong here a lot of these products are great but some of them are indeed pricey. For instance, when I got my hair cut at the end of June I purchased the hair wax that the stylist used in my hair and for 8.5oz (250ml) it was 25$. But some name brands will sell around 2-3oz for the same price. Hair products can not only be expensive but a lot of them also contain a lot of harsh chemicals that can cause hair damage and those 5 minutes of hairstyling every morning can turn into months of restoration. So in this instructable I'll be telling you how to make your own hair styling product that doesn't contain any harsh chemicals, can be made for a fraction of the price of a regular product, and works just as great! So here I present you with All Natural Diy Hair Styling Pomade!

Ps, I'm really sorry for the bad quality photos. I shot every photo off of my iphone and I had to do it really quickly so I could keep up with making my own pomade.

Step 1: Ingredients

This project isn't rocket science so you're measurements don't have to be 100% accurate but ideally you'll want to have 1 part beeswax and 1 part coconut oil or Shea butter (Shea butter will make your pomade less greasy.) but if you add a bit more beeswax than coconut oil or Shea butter your pomade will have a stronger hold and if you add more coconut oil or Shea butter your pomade will give you more shine. So you'll have to experiment and see what works best for you.

So what you'll need is:
1)beeswax (I bought 3 1oz beeswax cakes for around 6$ and free shipping off of Amazon.ca

2)coconut oil or Shea butter

3)some sort of oil (I'm using avocado oil but any other oil will work. (Olive oil, almond oil, jojoba oil, grape seed oil, etc...)

4) any essential oil for scent (completely optional, I won't be using any today.)

5) some sort of tin or jar to keep your product in (I'm just using a jar that used to have skin cream in it, but something like an altoids container would work just as great.)

6) a bowl (mine's stainless steel), preferably one you don't want to ruin

7) a pot to boil water in

8) disposable utensils so you don't ruin any good ones

9) a tablespoon to mesure the oil in

10) a towel

Step 2: Melt Everything Together

First things first, pour around 750ml (this might vary depending on the size of your pot) of water into your pot and start to boil it. Then, in your bowl put in around 1 part beeswax and 1 part coconut oil or Shea butter, I'll be using roughly 1oz of each because I'm using a 2oz jar. Then once you've done that put the bowl into the pot of water to make sort of a makeshift double boiler. You could also use a regular double boiler. While it's melting mix it occasionally with a disposable spoon.

Step 3: Add Your Oil

Once everything's about half way melted add 2 tablespoons of your oil and keep mixing.

Step 4: Finish Up Your Pomade

After everything's melted you can add a few drops of your essential oil. Then you'll want to wrap the towel around your hand so you don't burn yourself while pouring the mixture out of your bowl and into your container. After you've poured the mixture into your container let it sit until it hardens. While it's hardening I would suggest you stir the mixture so it's easier to get out of the container later.

Step 5: The End Result

Now you can style away with your new homemade hair styling pomade! Not only did you just make your own hair styling product but if you add a little Vitamin E you've also made yourself some skin cream and lip balm! To use this product, simply scoop out roughly a dime size amount of product (remember, a little goes a long way) and rub it between your hands to spread it out evenly, then style as desired. If for some reason you decided not to stir the mixture while it was hardening, simply use a blow dryer to heat up your pomade a little so you can get a scoop out. This product holds your hair up very well while staying pliable throughout the day. Well, thanks for reading and let me know what you think in the comment section. I'd also love for you to post a picture in the comments of how yours turned out and how you style your hair with it. T'ill next time ;)
