Introduction: Bokeh Shapes

Bokeh definition: A trick in photography where one part of the photo is in focus and the rest isn't, so attention is drawn to the subject. That out-of-focus area is called bokeh.

Most of the time, the bokeh is made up of many circles of different sizes. By putting a stencil in front of the lens we can change the shape of the bokeh. So I decided to make stencils using my 3D printer. With these stencils, the bokeh can have the shape of triangles, squares or stars.

Step 1: Print STL Files

Here are the .stl files that allow you to print your own stencils.

WARNING, these stencils are only compatible with the Nikon DX 35mm f / 1.8 lens.

Step 2: Install the Cap on a Lens

The stencils fit on the lens like a lens hood.

Step 3: How to Use It?

The best way to get good results is to take pictures with a big distance between the subject and the background. Focus on the subject, and there must be bright spots in the background. Don't forget to open the camera's diaphragm at f/1.8.

Step 4: Test It!

Be creative! :)

Do a lot of testing. With these stencils you can make even more artistic and unique photos.

    Great work!! Is the stencil's hole dimension directly connected to the f of the lens (and obviously to the diameter of the len)? There are some formulas to make this stencils for other lens?

    Thank you for your comment. I didn't use any formulas to determine the size of the shapes, I just did several tests with different sizes.
