I've been seeing lace-up skirts everywhere, so here's an easy DIY way to transform a regular pencil skirt into a trendy lace-up skirt with matching choker!

Step 1: Gather Materials

What you'll need:

Pencil skirt (or any other short skirt style)
Pencil

Step 2: Measure & Trim Skirt

If your skirt is a bit longer than desired, measure and cut it to your desired length. I chose to take about 2.5 inches from the bottom.

Step 3: Hem & Iron Skirt

Once the skirt is cut to your desired length, move to an ironing board and flip the skirt inside out. Then place a strip of stitch witchery along the bottom edge of the skirt, fold the material over and iron it all together. Be sure to use the steam occasionally to make sure that the stitch witchery fully melts and bonds.

Step 4: Position Eyelets

Next, flip the skirt back to the correct side and place pairs of eyelets in lines on each side of the front. This will be much easier if your skirt has seams along the front like mine did. Once you've decided on positioning and how many eyelets you'd like to use, take your pencil and mark spots in the center of each eyelet so you will know where to cut later on.

Step 5: Attach Eyelets

Now that each spot is marked, take your scissors and cut small slits at each spot. Then, flip the skirt inside out and secure each eyelet by following these steps:

Move to a hard surface that is conducive for hammering.

Place the base of the eyelet tool kit underneath the slit.

Slip the half of the eyelet with the smaller hole through the slit from the inside.

Dab a bit of fabric glue around the hole.

Place the other half of the eyelet on top.

Use the hammer and silver top part of the eyelet tool kit to secure the pieces together.

Step 6: Lace It Up

Take the faux suede cord in the color of your choice (I chose black) and cut it into 4 strips. Lace that strip through the top two eyelets on one side and lace x's all the way down. Then, take the second strip of cord, lace it through the second pair of eyelets and lace x's in the empty spaces. You'll now have x's in between each pair of eyelets.

Tie the cords in a knot at the bottom of each column and trim them to even lengths. I later chose to tie the bottom of the cord into 4 small bows, but you can trim the bottom of the cord off completely if you'd like!

Step 7: Create Choker

Now that the skirt is complete, take the excess material that you cut from the bottom of the skirt and smooth the edges using the stitch witchery and iron, just as you did with the skirt. Trim the ends if necessary.

Next, take the velcro dots and glue each half onto each side of the choker. Leave it to dry for a few hours and it will be ready to wear!

Step 8: All Done!

Once the choker is dry, your look is complete and ready to try on! I styled the skirt and choker with a simple black tank top for summer, and they will look great with a black leather jacket once the weather cools down!
