Introduction: DIY Rainbow Wall Decor

About: Hey, I'm Muhaimina! A Craftaholic person (or Witch if you may say!). Obsessed with swirls and polka dots... and Instructables is pretty much my second home! Follow my IG Blog https://www.instagram.com/the_craf…

I've been seeing these rainbow wall decor everywhere! Going through the tutorials made me think it's a time consuming and a pretty complicated craft; so I came up with an easy technique. I had no idea until I gave it a try; that it would be so addicting!

Check out the tutorial and let me know in the comments if you have any suggestion or tips. I'll be making a few more soon!

Step 1: List of Supplies

  1. Natural twisted cotton rope
  2. Yarns - 5-7 or more different colors of your choice
  3. Sharp scissors
  4. Hot glue gun
  5. Felt
  6. Needle
  7. Pompoms - size of your choice

Step 2: Step 1

Make sure that the rope you're using is thick. The one I used was 1/2'' thick. Take the rope bundle and start to prepare the strands by cutting the smallest one side of the rainbow pattern.

At first, decide the length for the smallest curve of the rainbow pattern. Simply place the rope on a flat surface and form a 'U' shape with it, decide the size you want and mark the rope on that point. Use sharp scissors to cut the rope.

Lay the small cut-out rope on a flat surface by forming a ‘U’ shape. Now grab the rope bundle and hold the open end of the bundle adjacent to any 1 open ends of the ‘U’ shaped rope and draw it all the way to the other end of the 'U' shaped rope. Mark on that point where both ropes leveled.

Similarly cut the other strands. Cut as many rope strands as you want. I'm using 1 strand for one color.

Step 3: Step 2

Time to wrap the cut-out rope strands with yarns. I’m starting with the longest rope strand. I'm using red yarn to wrap the longest strand. I'll be using a rainbow color scheme for this one.

Grab a rope and a yarn bundle. Tie a tight knot with the yarn around the rope by leaving 2 inches from any 1 open ends of the rope. We need 2 inches extra on both ends of the rope to create tassels later.

After tying a knot, a small length of yarn should remain, align that small yarn part with the rope and start to wrap the yarn around it as well. Wrap the yarn around the rope and try not to leave any gap between the wrappings.

Continue the wrapping until there are 2 inches of the rope remaining on the other end.

Step 4: Step 3

You can simply tie another tight knot to close the wrapping or you can use a needle to make a neat ending for the yarn wrapping.

Keep 3 inches long yarn on and cut it from the bundle. Attach a needle through the 3 inches remaining yarn through its open end.

Draw the needle through the rope, adjacent to the last wrapping. Pull out the needle along with the yarn. Now draw the needle through and between the rope and the wrapped yarn. Pull the needle out and cut off the extra yarn.

Similarly, prepare the rest of the rope strands. Select the colors of your choice and continue to wrap the other rope strands.

Step 5: Step 4

Select a piece of felt, which should be big enough to hold the whole rainbow pattern; and prepare the hot glue gun.

Start by attaching the smallest rope on the felt by keeping the intact ends of the rope remaining outside the felt fabric.

Continue to attach the yarn wrapped rope strands accordingly on the felt. Make sure to keep each strand adjacent to each other.

Step 6: Step 5

Done attaching the yarn wrapped ropes? Use a sharp pair of scissors to cut the felt along the top and bottom sides of the glued ropes.

Make sure that the felt is not visible from teh front side of the rope rainbow.

Step 7: Step 6

This is the fun part!

Un-twist the open ends of the cotton rope. Try to give the open ends of the ropes to give a much fluffy look.

Step 8: Step 7

Grab some pompoms and attach them along the top side of the rope rainbow pattern. Attach the pompoms however you want, you can fill the whole top side or keep even gaps between them pompoms, however you like it to be.

Attach a hanging mechanism on the back side of the rainbow and hang it on a wall.

I really enjoyed this project, it could be great for weekend craft therapy sessions. Do give it a try and don't forget to share a picture if you make one. Happy crafting!
