This is an instructable about making a monitor speaker from a car speaker.
A cheap way of making some speakers just to get rid of those awefull computer crap.

I got inspired by some building links. Check them out before putting your own together.

Enjoy this build and let's make some noise!

Step 1: Materials and Tools

Materials
  • 100 cm2, 6mm mdf (enough for this build, 8 euro)
  • adhesive
  • 3 mtr speaker wires (2,90 euro)
  • wire connectors (2,50 euro each)
  • car speakers (39 euro) sony 150 w, 2way, 4 ohm, 13 cm

Tools
  • jigsaw
  • drill machine
  • 3mm drill
  • 20mm screws
  • pencil
  • measuring stuff
  • Utility knife

Step 2: Measuring the Case

The case is:
25 cm high
20 cm wide
28 cm long

I made it a bit bigger than the speaker needs ia a car to improve the sound quality.

Saw the mdf wood with the jigsaw. Use a saw with small teeth.

Step 3: Measuring the Holes for the Speakers

To find the centre, draw to lines from corner to corner. The crossing is the middle. Drill a hole big enough to put the jigsawe through. Saw out the holes and you hav the front of the speaker case.

The speaker is 13 cm in diameter. Make sure the hole fits the attach points. The hole must be a bit smaller. i made it 12 cm.

Step 4: Connecting the Wires and Creating the Case

For the back wire connectors, repeat step 3 but make the hole the size of your connectors. In my case 7,5 cm.

Notice: in the back there is a hole missing on the picture. It is important to make an other hole above the connector. This extra hole makes your sound much richer.

The case is put together with glue and screws. Use the 3mm drill before you put in the screws. If you don't, the mdf will break.
Make sure it is air tight.

Step 5: Connecting the Speaker Wires

The speaker came with their own wires. This is very nice of sony. The connectors for the speaker self are this sort of claws. You stick them on the red and black pins and they don't come of again. The other end you must strip the ends and connect them to the wire connectors.

Make sure the red is on red and black on black.

Mount the speaker on the front panel of your case.

Step 6: Final Step, Testing

Now you are almost ready.
Put the hole case together and spin some records.

Have fun.

My amp is a pioneer 270 watt 4 ~ 16 ohm. The speakers are 150 watt and 4 ohm. I can't spin on full power but still enough to make my neigours angry.
