Introduction: Easy Pom Pom Birds

About: School is hard and I’m super busy, so I have been taking a bit of a break but hope to get back into it once my schedule clears up!

I have heard about pom pom creatures a lot recently, and though about making one myself. Inspired by images on pinterest, I set out making a pom pom bird. And I was able to do it. Now you can make your own little friend using these simple instructions.

Supplies

  • Yarn in two colors (I use gray as my main color and cream as my secondary color)
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue
  • Cardboard
  • 2 black beads
  • felt in main color and orange
  • 1 pipe cleaner in brown or orange

Step 1: Prepare the Materials

Grab your two colors of yarn and decide what color is your main color (MC) and your secondary color (SC).

Take your cardboard and cut it out into the donut hole shape shown, then cut out a piece of each circle. You can use templates for this part or just freestyle it.

Cut out the felt into two wing pieces, a tail piece, and a beak. For the wings I cut out hearts and then cut off the ends. Same thing for the tail except that the heart was longer. For the beak I used two triangles and hot glued them to each other.

Step 2: Make the Pom Poms

To make the pom pom, first stack your cardboard templates. Then begin to wrap the MC around the template. Cover 3/4 of the template in MC and 1/4 in SC.

Then cut the yarn ends and take a long piece of MC yarn. Wrap the yarn into the cardboard template, in between the pieces.

Then, putting the scissors in between the two pieces of cardboard, begin to cut the yarn. Every now and then, stop and pull the long piece of yarn around to hold the other pieces in place.

Once finish pul yarn tight and remove the template pieces. Then tightly the long piece of yarn so that the yarn now makes a pom pom.

Fluff the pom pom and trim it so that it is even.

Do this twice so that you have two pom poms.

Step 3: Create the Bird Body

Take a small piece of cardboard and cut it into two little squares. Glue each piece onto the bottom of a pom pom. Then glue the two pom poms together using the base. Make sure that the bird body has a long stripe of SC. This will be the side where the face is.

Step 4: Attach the Face

The face will be on the top pom pom where the stripe is.

First, take the beak that you made and hot glue it to the middle of the head.

Then take the black beads and hot glue one on either side of the beak.

Now you have your face.

Step 5: Wings and Tail

Attach the wings and tail using hot glue. One wing on either side of the bird and the tail on the back side of the bottom pom pom.

Step 6: Feet

Cut your pipe cleaner in half. Fold each half into the shape of a bird foot. Use hot glue if you need it to hold the shape together. Put a dot of hot glue on the end of a foot and push the foot into the bottom of the bird. Do the same for the other foot.

Now you have your pom pom bird. Enjoy your new friend!
