How to Make a Homemade Automatic Center Punch

An automatic center punch is a hand tool used to produce a dimple in a workpiece (for example, a piece of metal). It performs the same function as an ordinary center punch but without the need for a hammer. When pressed against the workpiece, it stores energy in a spring, eventually releasing it as an impulse that drives the punch, producing the dimple. The impulse provided to the point of the punch is quite repeatable, allowing for uniform impressions to be made.

Automatic Center Punch is a hand tool used to make a hole / dent in a workpiece (e.g., a piece of metal or wood) It is designed primarily for marking a hole for drilling and making sure the drill bit does not move during drilling. So when you have so much junk in the workshop, you don't really have to buy it, you can just build one like this easily, with the help of a simple spring and bolt. Watch the video and find out how.

Step 1: So What Do We Need?

So to start building the tool you need two things in total: screw and spring. If you have these two things you can get started.

Step 2:

Take the screw and cut it off the head, then attach it to the screwdriver and grind it until a sharp edge is obtained.

Step 3:

Now attach the screw to the spring. It is important that the screw diameter and spring diameter be identical to allow a strong connection to each other.

Step 4:

Now that the tool is ready, it's time to give it a try, so take an iron profile that's within your reach

Step 5: How to Run the Tool?

To run the tool, place the sharp end of a tool where you want to drill a hole. Then stretch the other end of the spring upwards and then release.
