Introduction: Kiki's Delivery Service Hair Bow - Big Anime Hair Bow

About: Hi! I'm Alex, aka "Supreme Thunder", and my goal is to teach people to copslay regardless of their skill level. I focus mostly on sewing, but I'm also interested in showing people how to craft, use makeup, sty…

Ever wonder how Magical Girls get those big anime bows to keep their shape? Supreme Thunder is here to show you the way! Ridiculously large hair bows are a staple for any anime school girl of the 80s-90s, Magical Girls, and super-kawaii Gothic styles.

Step 1: Step 1: Gather Materials and Cut Out Your Bow

You can make a bow from almost any fabric. Non-stretch fabrics work best, and don't be afraid to try out a printed or patterned fabric.

  • small amount of fabric - I used poplin but satin looks great
  • small amount of iron-on interfacing
  • iron
  • sewing basics - pins, scissors, ruler
  • hot glue gun
  • chopstick

Recommended sizes for different uses:

small hair bow - 3in/7.5cm x 2in/5cm

oversize hair bow - 8in/20cm x 5in/12.5cm

chest bow -10in/25.5cm x 7in/18cm

back/skirt bow - 12in/30.5cm x 8in/20cm

Step 2: Step 2: Sew That Bow!

Iron the interfacing onto the WRONG side of the fabric of one of the large rectangles. Then stack your interfacing piece on top of your other large rectangle piece with the RIGHT sides together. Sew using a straight stitch all the way around, being sure to catch the interfacing in your stitch and leaving a large gap (approx 2in/5cm) so you can turn it inside out later. Clip the corners of the bow.

Take your small rectangle and sew it together lengthwise. Turn both your rectangles inside out carefully, using your chopstick to poke out the corners.

Step 3: Step 3: Glue That Bow!

Now you will have that gap left over, the one that was used for turning the bow inside out. Carefully glue it shut with hot glue.

Once it's closed, place a line of hot glue in the middle of the bow and fold it in half lengthwise. Next, place a line of hot glue in the middle of either side and fold those halves in half again lengthwise. You'll want to end up with an accordion-like fold.

Take the small tube and seal one end with hot glue. Glue it to the bottom of the bow and then run it around the middle of the bow and get ready to secure the end. Seal that end with glue, turn over, and glue the whole thing onto the middle of the bow.

Now you're ready to add the hair attachment of your choice. I prefer snap clips clips, you can also use barrettes or alligator clips. If you're using a snap or alligator clip, you can simply slide it underneath the central loop, but you'll have to glue/sew on the traditional barrette. Whatever you do, it's going to look great, as long as you do your best!

Sincerely Yours,

Supreme Thunder
