Introduction: Maze Lock USB

About: I like making anything.
In this tutorial we will go over how to make your own unique hard-drive body which locks with a maze built into it. If your looking for something to fidget with or if you actually want to protect your USB drive, than this project is for you. You will need a 3D printer for this project to come to life however if you do not have one, I recommend you have it 3D printed at Shapeways.com. You will also need to create an autodesk account so you can use Tinkercad.

Step 1: Base Model

The first thing we are going to do is create our base model of the USB drive which in this case is a kingston drive. We need to create a 12 x 39 x 5mm box as shown, and a 12 x 12 x 5 cylinder as shown. Now combine the two objects into one.

Step 2: Create Shell

The next thing we need to do is create a shell around the base model. First, duplicate the base model and increase every dimension by 1 as shown except for longways, which is only increased on the back side. Now we need to create a hole box and drag it 12mm in from the end of the shell. We then combine the hole box and the shell.

Step 3: Making a Cap

Now we are going to make the cap of the drive. Make a 12 x 30 x 7 box and a 10 x 28 x 5 hole box, set up as shown. Next, combine the two and drag it to the shell from step 2 as shown. Now drag the right side extending the cap to 40mm.

Step 4: Starting the Maze

Now we will begin to construct some key parts of the maze. First gide the parts from steps 1 and 2. Create a 1 x 1 x 1mm cube and place it on the underside of the cap, 10mm from the center as shown. Now make visible the parts we made in steps 1 and 2. Now duplicate it and hide the duplicate along with the cap. Stretch the top of the cube ti make it 2mm tall. We will use this as a building block for our maze which we can duplicate and stretch as we want. This will result in a small, unique maze as shown. Make sure not to let any part of the maze be within 4mm of either side of the shell because it will make the maze partially visible when using (which we dont want). Finish the maze off by draging the last cube out of the end to create a path for the cap to be removed.

Step 5: Applying the Maze

Now we will finish off the maze. Make the maze only .5 mm thick and set it in as shown. Make it a hole and duplicate it. Drag the duplicate to the bottom of the shell, mirroring the top and combine the two with the shell. Make visible the cap and 1 x 1 x 1mm cube, and hide the rest. Reduce the cubes size to .8 x .8 x .5mm. Now mirror this vertically and combine the two with the cap. Now, make the base model we created in step one a hole and combine it with the shell we made which will make a holl in the shell as shown.

Step 6: Its Done!

Finally, youve finished. Now all there is left to do is 3D print it and slide a kingston USB drive into it. Make sure you memorize the maze so that only you remember how it goes. You can give it to a friend and see if they can open it and find out whats inside. If you liked this instructable, please vote for it in the safe and secure challenge Thanks.
