Introduction: Personalized Keychain - Embedded Wire

About: I am an Industrial Designer, who obviously loves to create. Now that I am a mom, most of my creations are inspired by my daughers. I believe that if more parents were making stuff with their kids, the world wo…

If you follow my instructable's account you know I love polymer clay. I love how versatile and useful this material is. And even though I've been crafting my entire life I've been working with clay only for two years.

I've done many experiments with it, most of them turn out good, but this one is my favourite. I love how elegant it is, it's hard to believe you made it by yourself.

You can customize it with your handwriting so it's perfect for a gift.

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

Pliers

Exacto knife

Wire

Polymer clay

Pen

Paper

Step 2: Write

Begin writing something special. You can write it by yourself or use a font that looks handwritten.

Step 3: Bend the Wire

Use the paper as a guide to bend the wire with the pliers. I've done this a lot of times, depending on the thickness of the wire you could be able to achieve small details.

Take your time, think how you wrote the word, which curve you draw first, and you'll see it's easy.

Once you finish cut he excess of wire.

Step 4: Clay

Take a ball of clay and roll it out, use something cylindrical as a tool, even the exacto knife´s handle.

Make it as thin or as thick as you like. I like the polymer clay Premo by Sculpey, because it won't break even if it's thin.

Using the exacto knife cut a shape, it could be anything.

Step 5: Embed

Make sure the wire is as flat as possible.

Place it over the clay. Push it, you can use a roller, your hands or even an old credit card.

Step 6: Bake It

Finally follow the manufacturer's instructions to bake the clay. For mine I baked it at 250F, 20 minutes. Every time I bake clay, I like to use a baking tray with a paper, if you bake it without the paper, the side facing the metal will have a shiny finish.
