Introduction: Printed Shorts

About: A crafty college student that sometimes tries to sew!

Hey there!

In this instructable I'm going to show you how to make comfortable, fashionable shorts out of about a 1/2 yard of fabric. These shorts require a little experience to make (you don't have to be a professional, but it took me three tries to get the shorts right). But don't let this scare you away! Let's start getting the supplies to make these.

Step 1: Gathering Materials

For this instructable you will need:

  • About 1/2 yard of soft, stretchy knit fabric (I got mine at JoAnn's)
  • A threaded sewing machine
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • A pair of shorts that fit you well- you'll use them as a pattern.

Once you have all your materials, let's get started!

Step 2: Cutting Out the Pieces

First, lay out your fabric and lay your shorts out on top of it. Then cut out an outline of your shorts following the badly illustrated pixlr dots (props to anyone who can successfully draw anything using pixlr) leaving 2 inches on all sides but cut in slightly near the waistband. Because the fabric is stretchy this way you won't need elastic to keep the shorts up when you are wearing them- the shorts will stretch naturally when you wear them, keeping them up. You'll need to cut two similar pieces of fabric.

Step 3: Sewing the Waist and Cuffs

This step will make your shorts look neater and add strength to the waistband and cuff. Fold over the edges of the top of the waist and the bottom of the legs and using a simple straight stitch on your machine sew these folds down as shown in the picture. Do this to both of your pieces.

Step 4: Sewing 'Em Together

Next, place your fabric pieces on top of each other with the wrong sides of the fabric facing outwards. Then I used stitch #14 on my machine- if your machine doesn't have this exact style of stitch then you can use a similar one. Almost done!

Step 5: Put Them On!

Now all you have to turn them right side out and put them on! You might need to trim a few hanging threads, but once that's done you're all set! I cuffed the front of my shorts, but you can do whatever you want with yours! Thanks for checking this instructable out and if you made a pair of these shorts put a picture in the comments- I would really love to see it! See you next time!
