Introduction: Rainbow Mobile/Suncatcher

I had been wanting a suncatcher, ceiling ornament and working with resins for quite some time, and without finding motivation, this seems to be the time. After moving house I have been trying to stay positive and looking to add personal things, make new memories and personalize the home with the possibilities available (not things that modify the rented place too much) and this is one of the things possible. I hope you find it useful.

Supplies

Safety:

  • Mask
  • Protective goggles
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Ventilated place or outside, away from animals and people (due to strong odor of resin).

Metal structure:

For color:

Step 1: Shaping the Figure

Materials: Paper with printed figure, tape, wire, pliers.

Use the pliers, the wire and the printed figure (use it as a guide), to shape the figure with the wire:

  • Clouds: Take one end of the wire, and with the pliers shape the clouds, overlapping when necessary, the wire over the sheet of paper with the figure, and bend the wire and cut when you have the clouds.
  • Arcs: Take the tip of the wire and cut with the pickaxe, the arches that represent the rainbow, using the paper with the figure as a guide.
  • Hoops: With the wire make hoops; 9 hoops, where we are going to hang chains that we assume as rain and the main hook.

Step 2: Soldering

Materials: Cardboard with printed figure, tape, soldering iron, solder wire.

Having the pieces prepared from the previous step, we will solder to join the pieces and assemble the main metal figure (I put a picture of the soldering points in red).

  • Tape the metal clouds to a cardboard with the marked figure, matching the location of the cloud on the cardboard.
  • Proceed to solder the open fragment of each cloud with the soldering iron and solder wire.
  • Solder each arc as shown in the picture, using the soldering iron and solder wire.

Step 3: Pre-coloring Preparation

Materials: Plastic paper, tape, silicone glue.

Solder the figure (rainbow and clouds), with no space to allow the resin to leak:

  •  Install or place the plastic on a flat surface, secure the plastic to the flat surface with tape.
  • Coat with silicone on one side of the wire fence, then place it on top of the plastic and wait for it to dry. In this way we make a wall that divides the spaces of the figure to be able to fill in the color without mixing them.

Step 4: UV Resin and Glitter

Materials: Glitter, UV resin, popsicle sticks, toothpicks and UV lamp. *Gloves, mask, face shield, open or ventilated space.

Now we will color the rainbow. I recommend starting with the clouds or the violet or red color (the ends), to go around the rainbow:

Note: Add each glitter separately, proceed to pour the UV resin, cure with the UV lamp and so on with each color.

  • Add as much glitter as you like with the help of a stick to each piece of the rainbow with the corresponding color. We will use colored glitter, of each color of the rainbow, in the corresponding order: violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red, as well as using translucent glitter for the clouds. Try before adding the glitter in each color, clean up if traces of a glitter of another color fall there.
  • Pour the UV resin into the corresponding spaces of the rainbow and clouds, span the spaces with the help of a toothpick.
  • Finish by curing the figure with the UV lamp for a couple of minutes or leave it in the sun and wait for about 24 hours.
  • Once dry, add a small layer of UV resin directly on both sides of the figure for a better finish and put the UV lamp for a few minutes.

Step 5: Making Rain

Materials: Metal chain, metal rings, pliers, soldering iron, solder wire, tape measure and 8 drop jewelry stones.

Make 8 strips with chains and shiny drop-like stones.

  • Cut 4 chains 5-6 cm long and 4 chains 3-4 cm long.
  • On one end of each chain, solder with the soldering iron and solder wire, a shiny drop-shaped stone with metal base. Make sure they are aligned.
  • Finally, with jumps rings and pliers, attach these chains with drops to the rainbow figure.

Step 6: Hanger Hook

Materials: Metal chain, jump rings, wire, pliers, shiny stone.

Finally, as final arrangements; we will add a hook to hang our rainbow, to this hook we can put a shiny stone as an ornament, in addition to installing the rain that was made in the previous step:

  • Hook: Hold the end of the wire with the round nose pliers and twist it to make a half circle. Then move to about 3 cm and place the pliers and turn in the opposite direction to make a smaller circle than the first one. Then, cut the excess wire with the end cutting pliers.
  • Shiny stone: Take a flat head pin, cut the head and with the round nose pliers, take the end of the wire and twist it to close a circle. Insert the shiny stone and with the rest of the wire, proceed to make another circle to close the shiny stone between two rings. Cut the excess wire.
  • Install to figure: Cut 5 cm of chain. Add jump rings to each end of the chain one end goes to one end of the shiny stone, and the other end goes to the hook. Add a third jump ring to the other end of the stone, this ring is where we will attach the rainbow to the hook. Finally close the jump rings.
