Introduction: Recycle Tin Cans With This Trendy Flower Pot

I have made a quick and easy way to reduce waste and recycle and reuse tin cans that would have otherwise been thrown away. I did this because I wanted to reduce waste in my household and now you can too!

Supplies

Supplies:

  • Compost
  • Two cleaned tin cans
  • Two small plants (any type)
  • Water
  • Trowel
  • Spoon
  • Drill (with any small bit)
  • Small stones (optional)

Step 1: Designing

First I made a quick design on Fusion 360 (file linked below). This allowed me to create an accurate pattern for the draining holes quick and easily.

Step 2: Cleaning the Cans

First you want to peel of the lids (or if they they are really difficult to remove you can use a can opener). After that, place them in a bowl of hot soapy water and you will be able to easily peel off the wrappers.

Step 3: Drilling the Holes

Using the pattern I had designed on fusion, I used a pen to mark the holes on the tin can and then I drilled them. These holes will allow any excess water to drain out the bottom rather than drowning the plants.

Step 4: Planting

First, fill the tin can up with dirt until the plant that you want there is at the right height. After that, place the plant on the soil and pack the edges with dirt, making sure it isn't loose. Make sure to water it and then your done!

Step 5: Decoration

If you want, you can do what I have done and scatter some small stones and and sand around the surface to decorate it. Now you can place it inside or outside as a trendy flowerpot. Make as many as you want!
