Introduction: Squeezable Stress Spinner

About: Instructor by trade at MMI. Hobbies include all air RC, 3d printing, and I love 3d modeling

I designed this for the fidget contest here on Instructables. I didn't want to make just another standard spinner so I attempted to design a spinner that could be used like a stress ball and spinner all in one. There are not a lot of extra parts to buy as the majority of the fidget can be printed. I will list the extra part and where I bought them when we are discussing those parts later on. I know that every printer will print a little different so you may have to sand down some parts.

Step 1: The Parts to Be Printed

I printed these in PLA, with the settings of:

.25 layer height

2 top, 2 bottom, 2 shell layers

50% infill

no supports, no rafts

I designed the (gray parts) top housing as 1 part with enough clearance for the arms to rotate, and the bottom housing the same way with 4 hooks to snap together with the top housing. If you attempt this do not get discouraged if the parts don't fit exact, as I mentioned not all printers print exactly the same way. Play with the settings and you will be able to print it in one piece as it was designed to be.

Then came the (yellow parts) spinner end caps that are made to slide into one another to keep the spring located as it should be, while allowing you to completely compress the spring without having the spinner buckle in the middle.

Step 2: Assembly

You will need to purchase the following parts for assembly:

1/2" Steel-Ball slingshot ammo (12 oz), doesn't have to be these exact ones but the same size.

Generic Abec 9 Precision 608 Zz Bearing, doesn't have to be these exact ones but the same dimensions

I will tell you that you will need to remove the seals (red) and then clean the grease out of them so they can spin freely. I just used a razor blade to lift the seal out then ran them under hot water to melt the grease away, and of course dry them out. I also applied a tiny amount of super lube in them and spun them just to help get the water out.

A 3 inch spring from Ace hardware, it does not need to be exact, you will want to go to your local supplier and actaully squeeze different springs to see which one feels good. I choose one that was fairly easy to squeeze but at the same time was strong enough to extend the spinner when it was spinning.

Next step is to install the bearings, gentle push the bearing into the top and bottom housings as seen in the pictures. You may need alittle force as they were a tight fit when I did it. Then comes the 4 ball bearings. I used a pair of pliers to help install them, if you installed them correctly they will actually pop into place as the holder was made so they would snap into place. If you have the ball out one side more than the other then it is not fully seated. All I can preach here is patience is you friend.

Step 3: Continue Assembley

Take the yellow pieces that support the middle and assemble them to verify fitment as seen in the first two pictures. They should be installed end cap, spacer, then spring guide. The top and bottom are different but they will only fit on one cap each as they have different size holes.

You may have to clean them up some to get a nice fitment. Once they fit nice lets install them on the actual housing to verify they fit those also. Once on test spin them to see if you have any binding. If they are very sluggish or harder to turn make sure the spacer is installed after the bearing before the spring guide. I have included a short video of the assembly. While I was assembling it the first time I also applied a little super lube to any plastic pieces that had to move such as the two middle shafts.

Step 4: Final Steps

Test spin it and enjoy! This spinner will not spin as long as some store bought metal spinners, but it still is fun to play with. I have also included the .stl files (on the next screen for you) if you would like to make one.

Step 5: .stl Downloads

Hope you enjoy.
