Introduction: the Begins of Lost Wax Casting
Using hand tools and flexible carving wax, I'm going to produce a one of kind belt buckle.
Step 1: Drawing a Pattern on Wax
Using a scrip and pre drawn template the shapes will be stippled onto the wax.
Step 2: Carving
Once the pattern has been transferred on to the wax, special carving tools are used to start shaping the forms.
Step 3: Sawing
Once most of the carving has been accomplished the large shape is sawed out using spiral saw blade held in a jewelers saw.
Step 4: Functioning Components
The functioning parts of the belt buckle were added to the back using an alcohol torch, and variety of wax shaping tools.
Step 5: Texture and Finishing
Regular hand files were used to clean up the applied parts, and to add a little more interest to the back a light texture was melted in.
Step 6: Finishing (aka Smoothing Out the Wax)
In order to remove fine scratches, a wax solvent is applied lightly to these rough areas. This process gives your wax the smooth finish it needs before being placed in a model.
