Introduction: Wet Etched Window Art

Create an etched glass look on a thin transparent plastic-like material with a liquid solution and food coloring.

Step 1: Gather Materials

.5 Teaspoons of Food Grade Sodium Alginate

2 Cups of Water

Food Coloring

Disposable Baking Pans

Popsicle Stick

Cuticle Stick or Fork

Measuring Cups and Spoons

Hand Mixer

Step 2: Mix Sodium Alginate and Water

Use a hand mixer to mix sodium alginate and water in a large bowl. It will clump, so make sure it is completely mixed. Let the solution sit for at least 24 hours. The solution should be clear and free of bubbles before moving on to the next step.

Step 3: Smooth Pan

Use a popsicle stick to smooth out indents in the bottom of the disposable baking pan.

Step 4: Create a Design

Use a fork or cuticle stick to make indents on the bottom of the pan.

Step 5: Add Sodium Alginate Bath

Pour a thin layer of the sodium alginate bath on to the design on the pan.

Step 6: Add Food Coloring

Add food coloring. You can add multiple colors, but all colors will completely disperse over time.

Step 7: Swirl the Food Coloring Around the Solution

Swirl the food coloring around. Let the pan sit for a few days at room temperature.

Step 8: Carefully Remove the Design

Carefully remove the design from the pan when it is dry. It will resemble plastic.

Step 9: Enjoy

Hold the sheet up to the light and see your design. Feel free to cut the edges off. The sheet can not get wet or it will dissolve.
