Acrylic Poured Jewelry That Reacts to Black Light !

I recently I have been delving into acrylic pouring which consists of mixing acrylic

paint with water and pouring medium and pour it onto your desired surface.

- This Instructable will show you how to make jewelry with acrylic pouring skins with a twist : fluorescent paint that reacts to black light.

Pretty neat for UV themed party's ;D.

Supplies

You will NOT need all the materials listed it seems a lot but it depends on what you want to do:

1 Prep materials :
- Cups

- Tablecloth for crafts

- Kitchen scale

- Wooden craft sticks here

- Fine Mesh Strainer

- Plastic document folders

- Kitchen Blowtorch

- Black light LED (optional) here

2 For the paint :
- Fluorescent acrylic paint in different colors, Liquitex here

- Black and white acrylic paint

- 3 in 1 multipurpose oil here

3 Pouring medium (you decide if you buy it or make it yourself):
- Store bought pouring medium Liquitex here

- Homemade pouring medium :

- School glue PVA here

- Floetrol here

- Varnish (optional)

- Flow aid Liquitex (optional)

4 Jewelry :
- Superglue

- 3D silicone glue here

- Injection serringe for the 3d glue here

- Patafix glue pads to help set here

- Medical alcohol to clean before gluing

For ear studs:

-Stainless Steel Blank Stud Earring 12 mm with clasp and glass stud (you decide the color) here

For Pendants :

- 2 Tapered flat pliers for jewelry here

Step 1: Prep , Prep and Prep Again

Prep your workspace, cover your table with a kitchen cloth and premix all your paints, pouring medium BEFOREHAND and MAKE ENOUGH.

This step is really important because you don't want to be in a pinch and realize that you don't have enough paints at the ready.

This technique will get messy so clean as soon as you can ;).

Step 2: Mix Your Pouring Medium

DISCLAIMER : You can skip this step if you bought premixed pouring medium like Liquitex Pouring medium.

Bare in mind that your own pouring medium will be cheaper than store bought pouring medium in the long run.

- Weigh all your ingredients and write it down so you can always have the same consistency and avoid nasty surprises. STRAIN all the ingredients to avoid lumps and put them in plastic bottles.

For my pouring medium i used :

* 100 gr of Floetrol

* 100 gr PVA school glue

* 15 g of water

* 15 g of liquitex flowaid (optional)

Step 3: Mix Your Paint, the BRAND MATTERS!

ADVICE : again use your kitchen scale and measure in gr, ml or oz to have the same consistency.

The amount of each ingredient will change depending on the brand. Use reusable cups if you can.

For the liquitex fluorescent paint I used :

* 8g of paint

* 7 g of water

* 5 g of pouring medium

The ratio will change depending on the brand you will have to adjust the ratio if you realize the texture isn't right for you.

1. Put paint in a cup

2. Mix in small amounts your water into the cup with the paint. Stir until you can't see lumps.

3. Mix in your pouring medium.

4. Strain all and put in your varnish (optional) and fold in 3 drops of silicone oil if you want to have cells (don't over mix the oil).

5. Let it rest for 3 minutes.

Step 4: Pouring the Paints

Put your plastic folder on a board to pour the paint on the surface so you can swirl it around if you want.

Be sure to pour ENOUGH paint if the skin is too thin it will brake.

The technique I used is called Swipe technique :

1. Pour your paints in small batches to create a colorful rectangle.

2. Around the rectangle pour the black paint.

3. Swipe with a tool (cardboard or PVC sheet) the black color over the other colors. CAREFUL don't be too rough and scrape of the paint.

4. Use a blow torch and run lightly over the surface to create cells (only if you put in silicone oil in your paints.)

Step 5: Wait ... and Peel Off

Here comes the real challenge DON`T TOUCH anything, let it rest for 2-4 days.

Store the acrylic skins in plastic folders to avoid them sticking together.

Step 6: Assembly

After you found the pattern on your acrylic skins for your necklace and earrings it's time to glue everything together.

ADVICE: use patafix glue pads to avoid putting grease on the glass beads.

1. Clean the glass beads with medical alcohol and a paper towel.

2. Place silicone glue with a craftsyringe onto the beads flat surface and press them on the acrylic skin. Let all rest for 1 hour at least.

3. Cut around the excess with scissors and clean the top surface of the bead.

4. Put superglue on the metal trays and put on the glass beads let it rest for 15 minutes.
