Introduction: Angle Grinder Hack - 10 000 RPM Pencil Sharpener

About: I'm a maker by nature but not by profession. I do all sorts of creative stuff and I want to share these things with you. I will mainly be posting all sorts of crafts on instructables for now but maybe I'll do …

I like to draw. When I draw I constantly have to be sharpening my pens and that REALLY annoys me. I quickly realised that motorized pencil sharpener would be the answer to my prairs. I came up with a plan to minimize the ammount of time I have to be sharpening my pens - I combined a pencil sharpener with the highest rpm machine I had access to - a 10 000 rpm angle grinder.

IF YOU ARE TRYING TO BUILD THIS YOURSELF I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE YOU MIGHT CAUSE TO YOURSELF, OTHERS OR PROPERTY. THIS PROJECT IS DANGEROUS, PLEASE USE AT LEAST RAY BAN GRADE EYE PROTECTION AT ALL TIMES.

Step 1: TOOLS AND MATERIALS

This project can be done with minimal tools. All you need is:

-An angle grinder

-A drill, rotary tool or other hole making device

Materials I used for this project:

-A round pencil sharpener with the hole of the sharpener in the middle of the top

-Metal pencil sharpener

-Epoxy glue

-A nut that fits your angle grinder

-Electric tape

Step 2: Preparing the Cap of the Pencil Sharpener

If your pencil sharpener has a plastic sharpener attached to the cap. You need first remove the the plastic sharpener and replace it with the metal one. This is done simply by ripping out the plastic one and then using A LOT of epoxy glue to glue it in there. I covered the blade of my sharpener with electic tape to protect it from the epoxy. Then I put a decent amount of epoxy all over the sharpener to hold it in place in extreme speeds. Make sure that the hole of your metal sharpener lines up with the one on the cap. Othervise the sharpener will be dangerous and not centered. Remember to remove the electric tape before the epoxy hardens!

Now the cap should be ready. Don't stress too much about the balance since the nut you attach to the angle grinder will be much heavier and it should stabilize the sharpener even in high speeds.

Step 3: Preparing the Bottom Part of the Sharpener

This part is really easy. Just drill a hole in the middle. I did not have a right size drill, so I made too big hole and centered the device by wrapping the nut in electric tape so that it just fits to the bottom of the sharpener.

Now you just need to assemble theis device of doom and carefully do some test runs first without the cap to see the bottom part is centered properly and doen't start wobbling around. Then Do the same test runs with the cap before sharpening your pens.
