I've found some heavily used tags to be a bit finicky (I think that's why they leave them on). If you hold the tag above the magnet (not on it) and move it around and through the field, you will hear and feel it click. Lightly wiggle the pin side to side. If you try to apply constant upward pressure or yank it hard, it just locks it up. Pulling too hard can bend the mechanism inside and make it even harder to get off.

It should. Any strong magnet will do. Give it a shot and see.

I like video, but I agree with you about written step by step. The written steps allow one to follow along. Pausing, rewinding and playing again is not so useful when your hands are wet, oily or dirty. In this particular case, the instructions are quite simple without written steps. I didn't watch the video because I understand the principal of Boyles law on an open airspace...but that is me.There does exist a "be nice policy here" on Instructables. Your passive aggressive reply was not needed. Good job on your Instructable. Thanks for sharing Von Melgowski!

It will be immediately evident. When you put the magnet on the end and move it around you will hear the mechanism clicking. You are basically picking the lock with the magnet. You have to move it around.
View Instructable »Its a pretty strong neodymium magnet. I don't know the actual pull or gauss of it.

Yes. It becomes very solid, like a hard plastic.

Several people said it worked if you go back and read. Others applied the magnet wrong or never actually tried to do it, so they bash it. Most are bored children. If you know anything about lock manipulation, its not magical, it's touch and feel. Shimming a set of handcuffs off is way different than picking the mechanism or shearing the swivel. I have been a pro member here for almost 10 years. I, like others believe in the be nice policy. When people create an account just to leave a negative comment, that is, by definition, trolling. We call em like we see them. It's not arrogance, it's just the way it is.Here's a challenge for you. If you have a better way to pic the lock, creat an Instructable and show me up. Pick it, not cutting, mutilating or smashing it, manipulate it so it can st…

It worked. It was very painful at first, so I only did it for an hour at a time until it felt better, then left it on all night. It has been reduced to about a third of its original size. Ill continue with this. Thanks for the Ible'.Lex

Using a key float instead of an eraser. Feels like it's working. Thanks for the great Instructable.

For this application, strong enough to hear a click when you run the tag over it. Not going to work with a thin vinyl refrigerator magnet.
