Yes - I used landscapers fabric around the drain holes. I wanted to minimize potential plastic related contaminants. I did not oil the wood although this is probably a benefit to the longevity of the wood. I was concerned with that leaching into the vegetables. Bottom line - if there was a potential for contamination, I tried to avoid it. This was also a reason for not using treated 2x4. I may have been paranoid though. The box is in it's final season now - just growing herbs this summer/fall but the one end of the cedar box has started rotting. Not enough to fail yet but you can see that replacement is inevitable. It has lasted long past what I expected - Cedar weathers well. The base is still pretty solid too.
View Instructable »The width of the box should end up at about 22" wide. Stock 8" wide is not quite 8" and should measure ~ 7-1/4". This means that 3 boards wide will end up at 21-3/4" which provides for 1/4" clearance fitting to the frame. The total frame opening using 19" separators as shown in the sketch will be 22" (19" + 2 x thickness of a 2x4 which is 1-1/2") If you are concerned, make up the base first, measure it and then adjust the 19" separators to make the frame a little wider. For example, if you measure your base to be 22", then cut the separators to 19-1/4" to provide extra clearance. It's unlikley that you will need to do this. If you cut accurately, and you keep everything nice and straight, the 1/4" clearance will be eno…

Probably too late but the STEP file for the triple clamp is already attached to Step 12. STEP is a 3D format that most 3D modelling packages can read. For cost, a one-off part this size will probably run you in the range $150-$350. It is an expensive hobby. I was happy with the part although I would increase the depth of the counter bore around the center shaft by about 2mm. This will ensure that the large nut that holds the triple clamp to the frame fully engages all threads with the standard Honda washer.

Hi, added the step file for the triple clamp to the last step of the instructable.Expect to pay around $300 for a custom machined triple clamp from a regular machine shop. Xometry.com for example will quote you online. Then there are motorcycle custom shops who will probably cost a bit less if you send them the step file. Here's an example: https://cognitomoto.com/products/custom-made-billet-triple-clamp?variant=10497282369Mine was machined by a colleague at work so it only cost me the raw material, infinite patience and a steady supply of beer :)

At the home improvement stores in our area, the only 4x4 posts available are the pressure treated ones. I was concerned about chemicals leaching into the vegetables from the pressure treated wood.

I like that - the depth is great and will sustain deeper rooting plants well. Nice workmanship!
View Instructable »Its not so much an irrigation system as a drainage system. I did line the box with porous landscape mesh to stop the soil from escaping and let the excess water drain through the bottom into PVC channels.

The blinkup procedure has always suffered from lack of sensitivity. What you experience is not version related but screen intensity related. I lie my phone right on top of the circuit to blinkup. Well, not so much anymore.... I use ESP32 boards for my hobby projects now. Blinkup was a great idea but probably also the #1 problem for all of the older imps. I have a version 4 Imp board that is way better in this regard.

The only reason I went with a welded construction was that was the stock flat bar I had on hand. Cutting a single bracket out of a larger sheet is better way to do it so go for it!

I prefer the Kreg screws. Regular deck screws will probably work just as well.

Back in the day, Instructables restricted file formats so a workaround was to rename files to PDF before uploading them. Some of the PDF files are ZIP archives so save the PDF to your local drive and then rename to .ZIP. Other's are CamBam files for which you remove the .pdf part of the filename. Hope that makes sense... bottom line read the text for each step that includes a download - they describe how to use the files attached to the step.

That is simply fantastic! Well done!
I did not see this coming! Great idea 😁
I don’t see why not. Over time they will rust and get filled with dirt and debris from the environment, so choosing a castor made for outdoor use will be important.
My box is untreated and has lasted about 8 years. I expect to have to replace the box next year or so. The base is still fine.
