Introduction: Cheap Easy Baby Rattle

About: I'm a Mum, an adventure guide, a radio tech, an avid inventor of cardboard box/toilet roll style fun, with the occasional grownup thing thrown in too.

Baby's love colour and making noise. You don't have to spend much to make something they can really enjoy.

All you need is:

  • used kids drink bottle
  • rice
  • paper funnel
  • food colouring (optional)

Step 1: Pour Rice

Use the paper funnel (instructions here) to pour the rice into the bottle.

Fill approximately one third of the bottle.

Make sure to leave enough room for the rice to rattle.

Step 2: Colour

Add a few drops of food colouring.

It is better to add too little than too much as you can always add more, if you add too much the rice will be wet and sticky and will not rattle.

If you want to make a mixed colour (like purple) add half as much of each mixing colour (blue and red for purple for example)

If you would like multi coloured rattle rice (rainbow) colour the rice separately then combine them in one bottle.

Step 3: Shake

Screw the lid on and shake the bottle to spread the colour through the rice.

Shake the rattle to play.

Give the rattle to a baby/toddler to shake and play.
