Introduction: Clockwork Heart Pendant Necklace
I was inspired to make this when I was watching TV one day and saw an Ad for a multivitamin for cardiovascular health that showed a heart made of watch gears. The image reminded me of a book that I read a while ago called The Alchemy of Stone by Ekaterina Sedia. The main character in the novel was a clockwork automaton who needed a key to wind her mechanical heart. I'm not exactly sure what the heart looked like so this necklace is really just my own interpretation of a clockwork heart (the watch gears don't actually move).
Step 1: What You Will Need
- a heart shaped stone, or if you don't have one you can create a heart shape with polymer clay
- various bits of metal and watch parts (watch gears etc.)
- jewelry wire
- super glue
- needle nose pliers
- (optional) black hobby paint
- small rhinestones/gemstones
- chain or cord to hang pendant necklace
Step 2: Watch Plate
I had a small plate from the inside of a watch that fit nicely across the face of the quartz heart. I applied some black paint and wiped it off with a cloth before it dried to give it an aged/ smokey look.
Step 3: Add Gears
On the larger gear I drew a small keyhole. I then added the other gears around it so that it looks like they are interconnected (like it would actually turn if you cranked the key). I also added some to the back so that it looks like the gears are inside of the heart.
Step 4: Wire Coil
I wrapped wire into a small coil using a nail and needle nose pliers.(The wire is silvery in colour but once I started wrapping it into a coil it turned a coppery colour -I quite like the effect). I added another loop to the end of the coil so that you can hang the pendant on a necklace chain/cord. I then bent the coil into a half heart shape and glued it to the side of the heart.
Step 5: Finishing Touches
I added a few more gears to finish it up as well as a few small gem (glass) stones in the screw holes on the watch plate. Add the necklace chain/cord and your heart pendant necklace is ready to wear or give as a gift.
