About: Hello, I'm Lynette and I love to sew. Why buy clothes when you can make them? I love the freedom of draping and drafting my own patterns. I also enjoy sharing my gift with others as well learning. So let's enj…

A step by step tutorial on how to make a cute tank top and maxi skirt to match.

What you'll need:

fabric I used 1 yard for top and 1 1/2 yard for skirt

draping tape (optional)

dress form (for top or a tank top you already have)

sewing machine

Step 1: Make the Skirt

Get a skirt that fits you well and use it as the pattern. I use a stretched mini skirt as my pattern. I simply laid it on top of my doubled over fabric and used a yard ruler to make my desired length. I cut it like a bell at the bottom, so that it would flare out a little. Cut it, pin it, sew it on the sides.

Step 2: Make the Slit

I put the skirt on and marked with chalk where I wanted my slit to go.

I then marked it with the ruler from top to the bottom.

Cut the markings open from top to bottom.

Sew it together from the top and stop where you want the slit to be.

For the slit roll the fabric once and then twice, pin it and sew it down.

Step 3: Make the Waistband

With your ruler measure how wide you want your waistband to be. I wanted mines about 4 inches wide. I took my waist measurement and divided it by 2 to get the length of the waistband and then add 1 inch for seam allowance. The reason I divided it by two is because my fabric was cut on the fold.

Sew the waistband so that it looks like a circle. I cut four pieces because I wanted my waistband to be doubled.

Match up the seam allowances with right sides together, pin it and sew one side. Leave the other side without sewing because that is the part that will be sewn to the top of the skirt.

Step 4: Attach the Waistband

Attach the waistband to the skirt by taking the waistband and placing the skirt inside of it. Right sides together and the top of the waistband that was sewn facing the bottom of the skirt. Attach the waistband to the top of the skirt, match the seams and sew it together while slightly pulling it. Hem the bottom of the skirt. Done!

Step 5: Let's Make the Tank Top

If you don't have a dress form you can skip this step and just grab a tank top you already have to use as the pattern. Make sure to use the same type of fabric (stretch).

1. Use draping tape to design your top on the dress form.

2. Pin the muslin on the dress from snuggly. Work with one panel at a time.

3. Get your sharpie. Trace the draping tape with dashes.

4. Connect your dashes with a ruler and add 1/2 inch seam allowance to pattern pieces.

5. Put the muslin back on the dress form to make sure it fits and mark your notches.

Step 6: Make the Top

Put the muslin on the fabric and cut it out.

Pin the fabric together and sew it.

For the neckline and armhole, roll the fabric once, then twice, pin it and sew it.

Step 7: Let's Make Straps

Measure how long your straps will need to be. Cut 3 pieces of fabric that length and make it 2 inches wide. Fold the strap over and sew the edges. Use a safety pin to turn the strap inside out. Pin the the straps to the tank top with right sides together and sew. Use a piece of the strap to make a connection between the bosom. Hem the bottom.
