Maybe you have cool looking bottle that you want to display, or perhaps you have an idea for a project that needs you to suspend a bottle in the air. Today I'm going to show you 4 different ways for you to hang a glass bottle.

Step 1: If You Have a Bottle Cap

I'm going to start with this bottle that has a twist off cap. I'll be using this eye bolt, so that the bottle will have a place to hook up to. With a 1/8 inch drill bit, I'm drilling a hole into the bottle cap. A slightly bigger drill bit would probably be easier, but I was able to get the bolt into the cap. Putting the cap back onto the bottle, it's holding securely.

Step 2: No Bottle Cap, Using a String

Not all bottles have a twist off cap. With this bottle, I'm going to show you how to use this ridge near the top of the bottle to hang it with a string. Wrap the string around the neck of the bottle twice, keeping the loops loose. Wrap one end of the string around the other. Now I wrap that string around the loops 3 times, still keeping the string loose as I wrap it. I pull the strings in opposite directions so that I can see how centered they are to each other. They are off centered, so I grab the other end of the string so that I can wrap it around the loops also, but this side I'm going to wrap in the opposite direction. After 3 wraps on this side, I pull the strings apart again, and now they are centered with each other. Since the 2 ends of the string are now balanced, I pull them to tighten the loops. Now is a good time to test it. The string can sometimes still be loose at this point, but this time it worked out perfectly. Tugging and pulling and it doesn't come off.

Step 3: No Bottle Cap, Internal Support (The Plan)

The last bottle I hung from the outside of the bottle, this one I'll show you how to hang it from the inside. But before I build the support, I'll explain how I'll do it. This outline of the bottle isn't perfect, but it's close enough. The support will taper up the side, loop at the bottom of the bottles neck, bridge the gap to another loop, then angle back down on the other side. These loops will give me a place to attach wires to come out of the top, but strings should work too.

Step 4: No Bottle Cap, Internal Support (Building It)

I'm using 16 gauge aluminum wire. I cut off a length of wire, not really measuring how long. Using needle nose pliers, I bend the wire into this basic pattern. I bend a loop in the end of another wire and attach it to one of the loops of the support wire. I cut another piece of wire and attach it to the other loop. Now let's put it into the bottle. It may take a few tries to get it is good, but once it is, it will support the bottle from the inside quite well. But keep in mind that if you use a metal that bends easily, the support can be forced out of the bottle. It's a good idea to test this to see the limits, just make sure you don't add too much weight with this support.

Step 5: If the Bottle Is Open

Now let's say you have a bottle with the bottom cut off. You can use any of the previous methods just fine, but there is a much better and easier option for this situation. Use a key ring. Just make sure the ring does not fit through the neck of the bottle. Attach the key ring to a wire or string, then pass that through the top. In my opinion this is one of the best methods if it is an option. It's very easy to do and extremely strong. Just as long as the key ring isn't too weak and cheap.

Step 6: Summary

Let's take another look at each of the bottles ready to hang. If you have a bottle with a twist on bottle cap, using an eye bolt is a great option. But if you have a bottle that has uses a different type of cap, or perhaps you no longer have the cap or it uses a cork, just as long as it has a ridge near the top you can tie a string to it. If the bottle doesn't have that ridge, or if you have a dark bottle and just want to hide the support on the inside, you can build this wire bridge for it. If you have access to the inside of the bottle, just use a keyring.
