Introduction: Khal Drogo Metal Belt

With Ren Fest 2k17 quickly approaching it was time for me to begin making my fathers costume. In MN the only hot time of year is August with is coincidentally when the Fest is, so we all needed heat appropriate costumes.. And what better costume than Khal Drogo from Game of Thrones! Surprisingly this belt took almost as long to make as the rest of the costume, so I thought it was fitting to give it it's own tutorial.

This build took about 10 hours to make and cost about 30 dollars.

I think the horse medallions look kind of like cookies, so that's what I called them in this tutorial.

Step 1: Materials

- Sculpey Premo!

- Mold silicone

- Resin (I get mine in bulk here)

-Silver and black acrylic paint

- A drill and a small drill bit

- Waxed thread

- Thin plastic

Step 2: Trying Really Hard to Sculpt.

I knew I did not want to sculpt 8 individual horse cookies, so I decided I would make a mold of one. This meant that the original horse would have to be near perfect.

To start I cut out a 3 inch diameter circle out of card stock, then I traced it onto my clay.

I built up the bulk of the horse first with clumps of clay, then smoothed it out. Next I used a tooth pick to trace all of the indents and shadows of the horse, and carefully scraped them out. I used a q tip dipped in vaseline to smooth out all the hard edges of the horses features.

Step 3: Ribbing

The ribbing along the circumference of the horse was created by rolling out a tube of clay, pushing it to the outside of the cookie, then using a toothpick to make all of the indents.

I also used a toothpick to smooth the nubs.

I baked it in the oven according to the directions to cure it.

Step 4: Molding!

First and foremost I forgot to mention I made little beads out of the sculpy premo as well. They are made from rolled tubs of clay swirled together.

The mold is made from a two part putty that I rolled together. I carefully pressed it over the cured clay into all of the tiny details, and let it cure for 30 minutes.

Then over the coarse of a day I make 8 copies of the cookie out of two part resin. I followed the same process with the beads.

I drilled 3 holes on either side of the cookies with a small drill bit.

Step 5: Painting

I painted the cookies in mixed silver and black paint. I dry brushed the top of the castings in silver rub and buff.

Step 6: Ropeing

The cookies and beads were attached together with waxed thread. The beads kept spinning around so I glued a thin piece of clear plastic onto the back of them.

Step 7: All Done!

This belt took way longer than I thought it would, but it looks so cool! It weighs about a pound and a half as well!
