Introduction: How to Make a Mousewheel Scroll Smoothly

Because we are all tired of your scroll wheel clicking. This instructable will guide you through making your computer experience much better.

Step 1: Open Your Mouse

Locate the screws on the bottom of your mouse and unscrew them. This will probably take a jewelers screwdriver, since they are pretty small screws. Pull up on the back of the mouse, and pull back. It is not necessary to force. There are tabs in this stock Dell one, that force you to pull back rather than immediately out.

Step 2: Remove Mouse Wheel Assembly

Simply pull up on the plastic assembly holding the mouse wheel, including all springs attached.

Step 3: Remove Spring

Remove the spring holding the mouse wheel on, and then remove the spring that is holding on to the mouse wheel. This spring is what you feel clicking when you scroll with the wheel. What it does is press against the inside of the scroll wheel and when it goes over the bumps on the inside, it compresses. It then snaps back producing that click you are getting rid of.

Step 4: Reassemble

Put the first spring back on, and put the scroll wheel assembly back onto the mouse's PCB. If you are testing without the case assembled, to not be alarmed if it does not work. The wheel works because of the IR sensor near it, and it depends on the spacing greatly.
Put the case back on and tighten all the screws.

You are now finished.

Major props to Noah for the images.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZ_bgRm1NoE&t=607s

or like the logitech mx master 3's silent scroll wheel @ 4:16

because with these guys below who dud this or a variation of this the scroll wheel still makes a noise when they scroll hard/fast, would removing the notches remove sound completely?:

Flip the mouse over. There should be a black "V" shaped sticker at the bottom. Peel this off and underneath are 2 screws. undo them to open your mouse up. However, these mice don't have a spring or any of the other stuff shown in the article so you can't do it anyway.

Hello Crash2108,

Thank you for this great article.

I've followed your instructions with a noisy mouse and the result is excellent.

A question with your permission:

The Logitech K120 mouse does not support horizontal scrolling. Tilting the wheel is middle-click.

The problem is I can only tilt it to the left. Is it possible to make it "tiltble" to the right?

I'd appreciate your help.

Best regards.

The mouse used in this instructable is a Dell mouse, apparently. For which other brands of mice does this work?

Not even sure why Dell felt the need to make their mouse so noisy, but thanks to you, now mine is quiet as a . . . mouse.

Thank you for the great article.

I just removed the spring accidentally when I was cleaning up a logitech M100r. So I searched about it and am leaded here. Good to know it's a proper mod.

Thank you so much for this. Just replaced a Dell mouse due to its noisy scroll wheel - could have saved some money if I had discovered this instructable sooner!

Thanks - this works great! Just a note on finding the case screws on a Dell mouse - they may be hidden under the bottom pad (the crescent-shaped sticker). This should restick after you have followed the instructions.

Soooooo. Happy!!! Took mouse apart to clean it, as it was double clicking by itself all the time. The springs came out before I could see how they went back in. The photos were all I needed.

I need to remove the springs from two co-workers' mouses as they scroll in unison and it drives me crazy. Our Lenovo mouse doesn't appear to have a screw on the bottom.
