Introduction: Miniature Couch - Tiny Sofa & Tiny Lamp

About: Handmade crafts and products that I make using recycled or waste, cheap and easy to available materials. Also custom products are made using a mix of materials.

Hello everyone!

In this instructable I will show how to make this miniature version of a real life contemporary Couch or so called Sofa. Also a mini stand lamp.

This project is not a super complicated one. Therefore, I will simply explain all the steps with images that will be self explanatory. Before diving into the making process, I'd like to share a little bit about the history and design evolution of the couch.

_____

A couch, also known as a sofa, settee, futton, or chesterfield, is a piece of furniture for seating multiple people. It is commonly found in the form of a bench, with upholstered armrests, and often fitted with springs and tailored cushions. Although a couch is used primarily for seating. In homes, couches are normally put in the family room, living room, den or lounge. They are sometimes also found in non-residential settings such as hotels, lobbies of commercial offices, waiting rooms, and bars. Couches can also vary in size, color, and design.

The term couch originally denoted an item of furniture for lying or sleeping on. Couch is predominantly used in North America, South Africa, and Ireland, whereas the terms sofa and settee are most commonly used in the United Kingdom and India. The word couch originated in Middle English from the Old French noun couche, which derived from the verb meaning "to lie down". The word sofa comes from Persian and is derived from the Arabic word suffah, cognates with the Aramaic word sippa.

_____

The most common types of couches include the two-seater, sometimes referred to as a loveseat, and the sofa. The loveseat is designed for seating two people, while the sofa has more than two cushion seats. A sectional sofa, often just referred to as a "sectional", is formed from multiple sections (typically two, three, and four).

Other variants include the divan, the fainting couch (backless or partial-backed) and the canape (an ornamental three-seater). To conserve space, some sofas double as beds in the form of sofa beds, daybeds, or futons.

_____

A couch consists of the frame, padding and covering. The frame is usually made of wood, but can also be made of steel, plastic or laminated boards. Sofa padding is made from foam, down, feathers, fabric or a combination thereof. Sofa coverings are usually made out of soft leather, corduroy or linen.

Step 1: Tools & Materials

Below I'm listing the Tools and Materials that I used personally to make this product, though you can always use an alternative if its not available.

TOOLS

  • Ruler
  • Cutter
  • Pen
  • Pencil
  • Compass
  • Sketch Pen (brown)
  • Scissor
  • Mini Hacksaw

MATERIALS

  • Super glue
  • Wood glue
  • Thread
  • Copper wire
  • Aluminium wire
  • Plastic sheet
  • Wood sticks (driftwood piece)
  • White paper
  • Foam (light & dense)
  • Fabric cloth (blue, white & red)
  • Sunboard sheet
  • Heat shrink tube

COMPONENTS

  • Filament light (led)
  • Wires
  • Coin cell battery (3v lipo battery)
  • Ear buds
  • Tooth picks

Step 2: Making the Lamp Stand

In this Instructable I will first show the making of stand Lamp and then the making of the Couch (sofa).

The Lamp is very much simple. It's made with Tooth picks,Ear buds, and Paper. Also I attached a tiny Filament bulb (from a toy car) inside the Lamp.

For the Stand I used few Tooth pick sticks to wrap around an Ear bud tube (to pass wire) and glued them nicely. Then I cut a round piece of Sun-board sheet and fixed to it as a Base.

Also, I made a hole at the bottom to fit a 3v Coin cell battery to power our bulb.

Step 3: Making the Lamp Shade

For the Lamp Shade, I used Aluminium wire, Plastic sheet and white paper.

First, I made two rings with aluminium and then I attached white paper around and above it, and a plastic paper at the bottom.

Step 4: Finishing Our Lamp

Finally, I joined the Shade to the Stand using some super glue. Then I installed the bulb through the hole and fix the wires at the bottom to attach with battery easily.

And then I added few decoration to the shade and to the stand and some brown color paper as well.

Step 5: Mark and Cut Pieces

I took dense foam sheet to make the inner part of our Couch. Then I marked the bottom, back and side panels and cut every side, according to my size.

I glued 2 pieces together for the side Arm panels.

Step 6: Wrap Fabric Clothing

For the clothing I used Blue Fabric to wrap all around the pieces. I wrapped single phase, but you can wrap double to get a deeper color of needed.

I used super glue to glue faster, but you can use normal wood glue.

Note: if using super glue, then hold it a few seconds to dry completely, as it takes time to dry on those foams.

Step 7: Complete the Side Arm Panel

For the side Arms, I used extra Fabric as a belt to wrap around, so that it looks good in apearance.

Step 8: Join All the Panels

Now, our base pieces are ready. So, glue them together with regular wood glue and let it dry. You can also use super glue for a faster attachment.

Step 9: Attach a Bottom Plate

I used a Sun-board sheet for attaching to the bottom of our Sofa.

So that it gives a stable base to our Couch and also it will work as a base plate for attaching our Couch Legs or Foots.

Step 10: Make Seat & Back Cushions

Now is time for making our Cushions for the Sofa. For this I used some squishy foams and added above the hard foam.

Then wrapped it with the Fabric and thus our Cushions are ready for mounting.

Step 11: Make Pillow Back

For extra decoration, I made a couple of back Pillows.

I used another White and Red Fabric for the making. I Sewed the cover first and then fold it around and inserted some foam (you can use cotton instead) and again sewed the opening.

Lastly I added a Heart piece made of Red Fabric to the center of our Pillow.

Step 12: Make Couch Legs or Foot

Now, is the time for making our Foots. For this I used a driftwood branch and made four small Legs.

Then I colored them brown and fixed to the bottom plate of our Couch.

Step 13: Assemble Together

Hence, our Couch so called Sofa parts are now completed and ready for assembling.

Thus, place all the seat Cushions and back Cushions to the blank Sofa and also add the Pillows.

Don't forget to add the stand Lamp next to it.

Step 14: Finished Product

So, this is our final finished product of a Tiny Couch with a stand Lamp. Now you can easily make one for yourself and for your kids as toy set furniture or as a Home Decor item as well.

My plan was to create a simple tutorial for the making as well to use waste or easily available materials as possible. Though I think of making a large Sofa containing a tea table in future. So, please stay with us.
