Introduction: Semolina Black Gram DOSA

-Semolina black gram dosa is another variation of fermented dosa.

-Here we are not using any rice for soaking and can be healthy option for diabetic patients.


-One cup black gram

-2 cups semolina

-pinch of fenugreek seeds

-cooking oil

Dosa goes well with chick pea curry. Here are the ingredients for chick pea curry


-Half tsp cumin,mustard seeds

-Half tsp split black gram

-One potato and carrot(small size) diced

-one diced onion

-2 green chillies

-one sliced tomato

-2 cups of water

-2tbsp chick pea flour

-salt as per taste

Step 1: Soaking

-Take black gram in bowl,Rinse under running water and soak by adding water for atleast 6 hours

-Add pinch of fenugreek seeds while soaking

Step 2: Blending

-After 6 hours remove water from soaked black gram and transfer black gram to blender.

Step 3: Blend to Smooth Paste

-Blend by adding water in intervals to smooth paste

Step 4: Add Semolina

- Now transfer the blended black gram paste to bowl and add 2 cups of semolina to it.

-Important tip is while mixing semolina with black gram paste mix little by little by adding water slowly to prevent lump formation.

-Batter should be smooth without any lumps

-Batter should be of pouring consistency but not too liquidy nor too thick. Add water and adjust consistency so that we can easily spread on pan with laddle in circular motion.

Step 5: Fermentation

-Add salt to the above batter and ferment for 10 hours.

Step 6: Preparing Dosa

-After 10 hrs we can see small bubbles on top of batter which indicates it is fermented.

-Take a pan and grease with little oil.Take small portion of batter and pour on centre

-Using base of the ladle spread the batter outward in circular motion.This should be done little quickly.

Step 7: Add Few Drops of Oil

-Add few drops of oil on all corners of dosa and roast it until it turns brown color.

Step 8: Flip It

-Once it turns brown on one side flip and wait for second.

-Serve dosa hot with your favourite chutney or curry

I serve dosa with besan curry( chick pea flour curry) which can be prepared easily

Step 9: Procedure for Besan Curry

-Take little oil in vessel and when is heated add cumin mustard seeds

-when they splutter add split black gram,few curry leaves and green chillies

Step 10: Add Onions and Veggies

-Add diced onions and Once they are cooked add diced potatoes and carrots

- cover and cook for few minutes. Add sliced tomatoes and mix

Step 11: Add Water

-Once tomatoes become mushy add 2 cups of water,salt as per taste cover and bring to boil.

Step 12: Prepare Chick Pea Paste

-Take 2 tablespoon chick pea flour and dissolve in little water and make paste

Step 13: Add the Paste to Water

-Transfer the paste to boiling water and mix continuosly.Reduce the flame and cover and cook for few minutes.

-Atlast i added pinch of turmeric which i forgot to add initially.

-Switch off the stove and serve with dosa.
