Introduction: Shell Queen African Statue [DIY]

About: Hey! Get exciting new ideas on instructables with me!

Plastics have become an indispensable part of the society. Lightweight, easy handling, durability, flexibility, resistance to water, and other microbial attacks have made them ubiquitously popular. The extensive use of the long-lived polymer has confronted the environment with a challenging plastic pollution problem. So, it has become our duty to resolve the plastic issues. For the same, in my second instructable, I would like to take the privilege to share one of the DIY Idea to use the plastic to decorate your house by relying upon the African - Statue.

Before setting toward our journey, mark the points given below:-

  • The inscrutable has been written in simple and easy English to be understood.
  • If you are willing to make the project and while designing it if you feel bored, please do-not leave it alone as HARD-WORK WILL NOT DIRECTLY LEAD TO SUCCESS, BUT ALSO TO HAPPINESS, THE GREATEST GIFT OF LIFE.
  • Try making one and show your creativity and give contribution to design your room and even to the spirit of nature.
  • Moreover it will act like a secret compartment to hide your valuable things.
  • None of the activities performed in the instructable are harmful but adults much look after the child while using scissors or stationary knife as they are sharp- edged.
  • Both positive and negative comments are welcomed. Please do comment!

Step 1: Gather the Items.

"True wisdom lies in gathering the precious things out of each day as it goes by!" - E.S.Bouton

Don't worry one will absolutely not consume his/her's precious things to make this project. Some basic things are surely required.

Required Components Library:-

  • Any Plastic Bottle
  • Glue
  • Sponge
  • Toothpicks
  • Colours / Paints [Mostly recommended acrylic colors]
  • Empty tape inner roll
  • Bowl
  • Water
  • Scissors
  • Spoon
  • Pencil
  • Stationary Knife or Paper/Cardboard Cutter
  • Palate
  • Newspapers [Avoid using magazines]
  • Plate

Lets start!

Step 2: Soak and Soak

“The newspaper is a greater treasure to the people than uncounted millions of gold.” - Henry Ward Beecher

So now we are soaking the gold(Newspaper) in a container filled with water [2 Cups Approx].

Steps:-

  1. Take a jar and fill it will 2 cups of water.
  2. Separate the pages of the newspaper[Remember the no of sheets soaked] and soak it inside the water for 13.05 to 15.33 minutes. [Magazines should be avoided as they are more thick than the newspaper and will take much time to soak water]
  3. At intervals of 5 minutes during the process of soaking, try tearing the newspaper into smaller bits till small you can make.
  4. After soaking, drain down the water and allow to dry at least 2 minutes.
  5. After drying, add glue according to the no of sheets as mentioned below:-
  • 3 - 4 sheets = 10 tea spoons
  • 5 - 6 sheets = 15 tea spoons
  • 8 - 9 sheets = 20 tea spoons
  • More than 20 sheets = Number of sheets X(multiplied by) 1.5 ml of glue

6. After adding glue, mix it well like a dough.

Step 3: Ornaments Design

Ornaments help us to identify and locate, tell or communicate, remind and organize our action, they guide our attention, express and individualise, can generate an experience, beautify as well as re-present. Hence, ornaments are really important. Likewise, we would be having simple but significant ornaments for the statue. Follow the steps to do so:-

  1. Take a small container with water and cotton and add some school glue in it. [Water = 1 spoon, School glue = 2.5 spoon]
  2. Take the bottle on which the project is fabricated.
  3. Take some newspaper crumbs and start fixing them on from the back of the bottle as shown in the picture and continue to make the ornament.

NOTE:-

  • Make the ornament quite thick and flat so that designs can be easily carved.
  • Do follow the pictures.

FREQUENT PROBLEMS FACED:-

  • If the newspaper stuff is not being fixed on the bottle, use the glue solution that we made earlier and apply it on the bottle using the cotton.
  • Even after applying the glue, the newspaper thing is not sticking on the bottle, make use of a cloth and fill the newspaper crumbs in the cloth and press it hard to remove the leftover water. DONOT MICROVAVE IT.

DO FOLLOW THE PICTURES.

Step 4: Making Things Cylindrical!

NEGLECT THIS STEP IF YOUR PLASTIC BOTTLE IS CYLINDRICAL IN SHAPE FROM BELOW.

As told above, you need not perform this step if your bottle is cylindrical in shape from below. [As shown in the last picture]

If your bottle is not cylindrical (Like my bottle(Refer the image)), follow the steps.

  1. Add more glue to the mixture of newspaper and glue added earlier.
  2. Take it in your hands and start making the bottle cylindrical in shape by filling the curved gaps with this newspaper stuff.

NOTE:-

  • Do-not keep the borders uneven as shown in the pictures and make it proper using the cutter or stationery knife.
  • Maintain the thickness of the stuff filled in the gaps.
  • Keep some centimetre 's distance between the necklace and the boundary. [See the picture 11 or 12]

DO NOT MICROWAVE IT.
  • Even after removing the excess water, the thing is not sticking on the bottle, add little salt in it and after 5 minutes add more glue (2 spoons) [The salt would absorb the small water capacity and glue will make it sticky that would force the newspaper crumbs to stick on the bottle.]

FOLLOW THE PICTURES

Step 5: May My Statue Last Long!

“My God, a moment of bliss. Why, isn't that enough for a whole lifetime?”― Fyodor Dostoevsky

If we are practicing hard work, we need that the thing might remain as it is for a period of time. To make the stuff more firm apply the solution we made before (Of school glue and water) or if it did get finish, make it again.

  • Using the cotton, which we had dipped quite earlier, apply thin layer of glue over the newspaper ornament and the crumbs used to fill the gaps to make it cylindrical.

NOTE:-

  • Only apply the glue on ornaments if your bottle is cylindrical by birth.

FOLLOW THE PICTURES

Step 6: Make the Head and Neck.

As we have made the body of the statue, it is necessary to make the head. As head is made, neck is too required to be made. Or HAVE YOU SEEN A PERSON WITHOUT HEAD AND NECK? No, I think. Hence, it is required.

Make head and neck by following the steps.

  1. Take some newspaper crumbs and make a ball out of it using your hands.
  2. Now fix the cap of the bottle (which you are using in the project) in the ball as shown in the figure.
  3. Now keep the thing in the fridge. (You can also microwave it but after removing the cap from it carefully.) [Microwave time = 2 minutes]
  4. If you wish to microwave the head, set the time to 2 minutes and after 2 minutes let it cool down in the microwave as it is hot.
  5. Take some newspaper crumb and make the neck near to the cap on the bottle as shown in the image uploaded.
  6. Your head and neck(I mean the statue's head and neck) is ready.

FOLLOW THE STEPS

Step 7: Paint It Up!

"Life is like a blank canvas, it's up to you how you want to paint it!" - Me

The above quote sketches the deed of the people yet being described with the glamour of colors.

Color plays a vitally important role in the world in which we live. Color can sway thinking, change actions, and cause reactions. It can irritate or soothe your eyes, raise your blood pressure or suppress your appetite. As a powerful form of communication, color is irreplaceable.Colors enhances the beauty of the object on which it is painted. Likewise, we will paint the statue black. Further follow the steps.

  1. Take a sponge.
  2. Add some black color on a palate adding 2 drops of water in it.
  3. Using the sponge, paint the newspaper stuff black stuck on the bottle, without leaving white patches on it.

FOLLOW THE PICTURES.

Thereafter paint the rest plastic bottle using the sponge and black color without adding water to color as plastics don't allow water to stay on it and hence we are avoiding the use of water colors.

After painting black, allow it to dry for 20 - 25 minutes.

PROBLEMS GENERALLY FACED:-

  • Even after 20 - 25 minutes the newspaper doesn't dry, don't worry, use a hairdryer.
  • Even after using hair dryer it does not dry, keep that thing in snow or in freezer.

Step 8: Curling Hairs.

Aside from being good for raising, furrowing, and piercing, the hair there keeps the sweat out of your eyes. And the hair on your head shields your noggin from the direct force of the sun. Can you imagine yourself without hairs? No, right. Hence, the statue also should have hairs neither it would be like pizza without cheese; sweets without sugar etc.

Therefore, first watch the video and then using black paper make hairs of the statue.

  • If you don't have black paper, don't worry. Take magazine and paint it black only on one side because if you will curl on the contradict side, the color would come off.
  • After curling the paper, stick it on the statue's head using glue as shown in the image uploaded.
  • Make sure that you allow the glued hairs to dry.
  • At last make a small curl and past it over all the other pasted hairs to cover the pasted side.
  • If you wish you can make a small crown and stick in-front of the hairs.

Like always, DO FOLLOW THE VIDEO TO MAKE PROPER CURLS OF PAPER.

Step 9: Manifest Your Creativity.

In this final step, make sure:-

  • That you have proper materials (Sponge/Toothpicks, paint)
  • Use colors without adding water
  • Spread your color in a plate rather than using palate

Good design is simply the ability to portray your stuff the best way possible to make it look appealing and attractive. Our statue will have designs that will portray real effects of African statues. Glance up the components library and you will find the empty roll of tape. You can pain the boundaries of it and use it to print a circle on the statue or newspaper. Now, its your time to show your creativity. Some designs of ornaments following with the base of the bottle has been uploaded in the image tray. All the things can be made using the toothpicks of different sizes. You can cut one toothpick into smaller pieces. The last image shoes the stick man tribal art which can also be made at the base of the bottle as in my bottle. On the neck you can make small dots with lines above them depicting the tight necklaces worn by the women.

In my statue, I have designed it with some sea - shells and other stuff. You can also design it using beads, or threads or any other material. The need is to show how creative you are.

So here we end our project. Hope you liked it. If not please comment following the doubts, which are heartily welcomed. Bye for now and we'll meet in the next instructable.

HAVE A NICE DAY!
