In this Instructable I lay out how to build a minimalist sofa table. Including a cut list, you can pre cut all of the pieces and assemble after or cut as you go. The table can be altered any way you choose. You can change the dimensions or remove the drawer you can even get creative with different tops.

Step 1: Cut List

Cut List:

(1) 3/4" Plywood Drawer bottom, 11.5" x 19

(2) 1x4 Drawer Sides, 11.5"

(1) Table Top (plywood or other), 56" x 19"

Step 2: Cutting the Legs

Cut the 2x2 into four pieces at 35" and sand smooth. These will be your legs.

Step 3: Back & Sides

Cut a 1x6 into a 51" and two 15" pieces for the back and side pieces. Using a pocket hole jig set to 5/8 drill holes on either end on one side of all three boards. Attach the boards flush with the top of the legs using wood glue and 1 1/2" pocket hole screws. The boards will draw in tight to the legs with the screws and should be screwed to the center of the 2x2.

Step 4: Front Stringers

Next cut a 1x1 into two 51" stretcher pieces, using wood glue and screws attach the 1x1 to the legs across the front. Attach the top 1x1 flush with the top and the bottom of the bottom 1x1 even with the bottom of the 1x6 sides. This will complete the outside of the frame (see below)

Step 5: Front Two Panels

Cut two pieces of 1x6 to 14 1/2" and drill pocket holes on one side and one end. Attach to the legs using wood glue and pocket screws on the front of the table, keeping them flush with the top. Keeping the front panels flush with the 1x1 glue on the other side of the 1x6 front panel and clamp them together. Leave a gap in the middle (for the drawer).

If no drawer is being added, cut one front panel at the full 51" length and attach it in the same way.

Step 6: Support Braces

Next step cut a 1x4 into two 16" pieces and drill pocket holes on either end of both pieces. Attach the pieces from the inside to the table front and back 1x6's. These pieces will act as supports and keep any bowing out of the frame of the table.

Attach the bottom mount drawer slide rails (available at any Hardware store) to the bottom 1x1 and the back of the table. The rails should be spaced evenly in the opening left for the drawer.

Step 7: Top

Now your ready to make the top, cut a piece of plywood to 56" long by 19" wide. You can also join wood planks together to get the desired dimensions. For mine I joined three one inch planks of wormy white oak. This is where you can get really custom and creative, you can really use anything to make the top as long as its flat and large enough. If desired router the front and side edges to create a more professional look.

Step 8: Drawer

Next build the drawer box, cut a piece of pine or plywood to 19" wide by 11 1/2" deep. Drill pocket holes on the under side of the board on all four sides. Using a 1x4 cut two pieces at 20 1/2" and two at 11 1/2". Attach the four sides to the bottom using wood glue and pocket screws(or nails). Make sure the corners are square when joining to the bottom.

Once the glue is dry on the drawer box attach a piece of 1x6 cut at 21 3/4" to the front of the box from the inside of the box using 1 1/2" screws. I recommend attaching it with the drawer box in place. Use some hot glue to temporarily hold it while it is being attached.

Attach the handle or pull by drilling a hole from the inside of the drawer box through the 1x6 front. Make sure the spacing of the specific pull your using is the same. Attach the pull to the front.

Once your drawer is complete attach the drawer slider pieces for the bottom drawer slide to the back of the box using the same spacing you used for the bottom mount rails in the previous step.

Step 9: Attach the Top

Drill pocket holes on each side of the base at the top edge of the 1x6's on the inside of the table. Finally using those pocket holes attach the table top to the base to finish the table. make sure your screws are not to long or they will come through the top of the table.

Step 10: Finish

The table is almost complete now is the time to do any final sanding. Paint or stain the base with the desired color. Apply any finish or sealant to obtain the desired look.
