Diy o-ring with glue-gun

For emergencies, but not only: make your own o-ring. use a hot glue gun and some soft glue-stick. look for a round object more or less the size of the o-ring you need. form a steady bead of hot glue around it. wait for it to set. peel it off. if necessary: smoothen down the edges somehow (sanding-paper, file, etc). feedback appreciated. thank you.

Help! -I need a timed cigarette dispenser - seriously

Have tried everything to give up smoking and failed, so a neighbor offered to give me 1 cigarette every 4 hours so I can cut back. Now she is going out of town and I really need a machine to do this job. Can anyone come up with a relatively inexpensive machine that can be built by an amateur like me? I would be grateful for any help.

May 2019 site changes: my observations and thoughts

In early May 2019, Instructables' website has been radically reworked with a revamp. Changes I have observed include:Navigation: Many categories and subcategories have been eliminated and instead reworked under other folders as part of the changes (there is no "Play" category and subcategories such as "NERF" and "Paper Airplanes" no longer exist) "Recent" filtering is not directly available to people browsing the site--you must sift through the categories and get through at least two pages to find a way to filter the selected category for "recent" (i.e. Homepage -> Circuits -> Projects -> (Page at which you may select "recent"))There are no filters for searches On the front page and in the categories' main pages, featured projects are emphasizedThe Forum/"Community": Without manually typing in the URL, there is no direct way to access the "community" page Buttons to access the forum among in the category pages are tied to the community pages for that category (as a result. They do not allow you to see the general forum posts of the community without viewers manually deleting the category from the URL and going from thereThe way people navigate about sites controls what they can see and how they see if, so all of these things will change the flow and behavior of Instructables' viewers versus how it was before. Versus before, it is more cumbersome for viewers to get to recent content while featured content is more readily available. This will influence where people go and what they see.----------------------------------What do I believe this means for the future?Drawing on my decade of experience on this site, I suspect viewership of non-featured Instructables will drop. Thus, the viewership gap--between those projects that have been featured and those that have not think--will then widen.Of these changes I think people will say you either "get featured or get buried."

Repeat viewers could be excused for thinking that nothing has changed on Instructables between visits. How hard would it be to update the images on a daily basis ... using perhaps a random function?PS: This post is likely to be missed by viewers in other "Categories" and "Channels" as the posting options are too restrictive.

Wordless how- to videos.

Https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=r0oX4I11BMc This is not my video, but I thought it was pretty cool. I really like some of these wordless how to videos. I suppose that it assumes a certain familiarity with the processes from anyone who would do these projects. Yet, if you don't have a familiarity with welding for instance, you probably wouldn't do this project anyway. Any other good videos like this one?

Make use of iCamera 1000 units?

I have 3 "iCamera 1000" camera units laying around. I do not have the rest of the security system they are designed to function with, but there has to be some way to make use of them and have some fun. I have lots of cat 6 cable and RJ45 connectors to custom make a cable if anyone has the expertise to figure out how to make use of these. Before posting here, I searched and searched here and on Google but only found information regarding the "normal" application of these cameras..... I was hoping for something more outside the box which is why I am here. I included a front/back picture. Thanks for any ideas!!

Author Spotlight Interviews: Nominate an author!

We recently began a new round of author spotlight interviews. For the first interview, we chose to reach out and chat with Nikus, who recently won the grand prize in this year's Epilog Contest. You can check out our interview here: Author Spotlight: NikusThese interviews are a great way to learn a little more about individual contributing authors here on Instructables, and see what makes them tick! Is there someone who is an active author that you'd be interested in learning more about? Now's your chance to nominate a fellow author. There are no set requirements to be eligible to be nominated. But generally, we're looking for authors who've shared a good handful of high-quality projects, which made a notable splash within the Instructables community. And yes, if you're feeling bold, you may certainly nominate yourself! : )

High efficiency coilgun design

Hello there I need some (a lot of) help with my project. I've started to design a high efficiency multistage coilgun. The main feature of the design is using the self-inductance formed in coils that were shut down for accelerating the following coils. To perform this, we can divide each coil into 3 segments (lets call them subcoils), connected with a wire and power all them 3 with a single capacitor. At first, the current from the capacitor is flowing through all 3 segments and a projectile is being pushed through the first segment. Than the first sensor is being activated with the projectile and it switches the power flow to only second and third subcolis As the current in the first subcoil is changed, the self-inductance directed in the opposite direction is appearing. In theory, we can use this power to increase the current in the following segments. The same thing is happening between second and third segments. And I want to place 3 of this stages (9 subcoils in total) I will use 8mm caliber projectiles, 40mm or 50mm length. I chose 5200mkF 450V or 6800mkF 400V capacitors, 2 of them in parallel for every stage (6 capacitors in total) Yes, I know it sounds way too powerful, but that's my actual goal. It's not my own idea. I have learned it from here http://gauss2k.narod.ru/adf/gs3seg.htm (русские вперёд). So, some problems had appeared. I can't figure out how to properly calculate the required inductance of the coils. In the source it is said that the inductance of the first subcoil should be equal to two of the second and the third subcoils (L1=2*L2=2*L3) to achieve the best performance. Also, my rough estimates show that peak current through the coil will be about 1,5-2,0kA for 3,0-4,5ms. This is quite a lot! I'll have to manage this energy and choose the power switches rightly. To sum up, I will be glad to hear your opinions about this idea. It's kind of controversial, but I hope it's not a certain failure.

Call for contest judges

Hi everyone! You might have noticed we're running tons of contests these days. We need judges more than ever to make sure our contests keep running smoothly and fairly! The judging process is fairly simple and normally involves looking at contest finalists and rating them on a scale from 1-9. Judging is typically open Friday afternoon through Monday night, though some of the larger contests have judging that runs for a week. Time spent judging is around 30 minutes to two hours - it all depends on how thorough you are! If it’s not a good time for you to judge when we contact you, no worries. We always try to assign more judges than we need in case something comes up. You can find out more about judging a contest here. Don't worry!  Judges are selected after finalists are selected, so volunteering to judge will not affect your chances of being a finalist in any contest you enter. To be eligible to judge, you must have posted at least ONE instructable. Let us know which contest categories you're interested to judge in the comments below: Food Living > includes Home and Craft; so please just say Living if you are interested in either or both of these. Workshop Outdoor Tech Play NOTES: If you are interested in Halloween we'll pick judges based on categories/entries we get in the contests. Costume > Living   Decor > Play, Outdoor, and/or Workshop  Prop > Living and/or Play   Food > Food   Things will depend on what types of finalists we end up with. For example: If we were to have a lot of Tech finalists in Decor, then we would pick judges from that category as well to judge that contest. If you list categories you want to judge, but also say you would judge any, it gets a little confusing. Please try to either pick categories OR say any contest.  Thanks for helping us keep the site awesome!

Percent grass in the diet of cows producing grass-fed butter available around the San Francisco Bay Area

I eat a lot of butter. It is my primary cooking fat, I'll often drink butter tea for breakfast (~4 TBSP of butter with herbal or green tea, riffing off of Tibetan tea), and sometimes I'll just eat a few pats or feed a few pats to my kids when they're starving and dinner isn't quite ready. I believe butter can be a very high quality food, and I feel great eating lots of it.  I want to eat butter that is exclusively, or at least primarily, made from cows eating grass; not grain. I asked the producers of several types of butter available in my local market what percentage of their cows' diet was grass. Here are their responses: Berkeley Farms Cows are grass-fed on pasture whenever possible, but feed can vary given conditions.  They are also fed alfalfa and grain. Kerrygold From website: "The vast majority of an Irish cow’s diet is from rich, natural grass which grows abundantly in Ireland. Irish dairy cows graze outdoors on grass all day long for up to 312 days a year ... During the winter, when grasses stop growing, Irish cows are fed dried grass (known as silage) ... After calving, cows are provided with supplementary feed to help restore protein and nurture them through this period ... The majority of our cows’ supplementary feed is locally grown crops such as wheat and barley." Organic Valley Cows are primarily grass-fed on pasture, but they do receive supplemental feedings of grain. Sierra Nevada Cheese Company Cows are not exclusively grass-fed; they are also fed grain. Straus Family Creamery Our cows are pasture-fed and are certified organic. Whenever the weather permits, they spend their time out on pasture, grazing on the rich, sweet grasses that are typical for Marin and Sonoma Counties in Northern California. Their diet consists of about 75-80% forages, which include fresh grasses, silage and hay. The other 20-25% consists of a variety of certified organic grains.

How to add a loud speaker to (the most basic) landline phone?

Hello! How would you connect a loudspeaker to a basic landline phone (so several people can hear the conversation)? (Basic phones don't have loudspeakers, only the one handling the headset can hear). The loudspeaker doesn't have to be super loud, it could be like the ones powered by USB on computers, or much smaller, as far as we could hear the conversation. It's not that easy since theses phone are merely powered by the little current inside the landline phone line. So I guess I need another power source, like a USB charger, and maybe to amplify the sound signal, to use the loudspeaker. I started to learn electronics for a few months, but I have no idea how to handle this problem. Any advice would be great! Thanks for your help!

Challenge: A key defroster for opening bike locks in winter.

Hello all.So I live in Montreal, winter is long here. Every morning opening our bike locks is problematic. We fixed it partially with lube, but this post is not about these solutions.I have been looking for a device that could heat the frozen core of the lock. You can see an image attached of a product not available anymore to get the idea. I guess it was not working very well...I have zero knowledge in electronics/electricity. I thought this question could be interesting/challenging for some of you. So ideally the gadget would be:Small enough to be carried on the key chain or in a commute bag.Able to be inserted in any type of locksBuilt with a safe way to prevent unwanted switch on (to avoid burning bags/pockets/houses...Lol)Able to produce enough heat to defrost the lock Rechargeable would be best (USB best best), capacity of 5mn maybe to operate twice a day...Reasonably quick to unfreeze the lock, so you don t freeze yourself (That s why I abandon using hot pouches around the lock, pouring hot water will fix it quickly but then it will freeze again)As I said, I don t have the skills to even begin to find a solution, but I saw a lot of smart stuff here and I am curious to see what you guys would answer to that. My guess is that it must be very difficult, if not I can t see why a similar product is not widely commercialized. I think a lot of people would buy it.Thanks for the reading, I hope I picked your interest. Have a good day.

HDD Data Recovery

I need to recover data from my external HDD. It was plugged into a laptop when I was reinstalling XP. By accident I deleted the partition on it and not the one on the laptop. (That laptop is now fine, but my hard drive is not) From what understand, it didn't go around deleting every byte of data, it must have just deleted the bytes with the "partition" on it. (I'm guessing thats why F.B.I etc.. can recover people's erased data.) So- I'm hoping my data is recoverable. I'm good with computers, but this has never happened to me, so any help would be greatly appreciated. (on a whatever OS you prefer!)

Recent changes are clunky, complicated, and a bit annoying.

Let's start with the community:Getting to community pages are complicated- There should be access from the front page. There is no over all community, each one is segregated. There should be a "general," page for things like website concerns, over all information, etc.Moving on to the website:There are no "All," options to view all the updates/feeds.I understand the defined feeds were sought to give clear access to each ordered category, but it's far too many channels or feeds to follow. How are "Featured," and "Editor's Picks," actually chosen or defined? Having to go to the "Feed" tab to fill it up is annoying. If we are forced to use this clearly not wanted "Feed," feature, allow us the ability to follow a category from the category's page. (It's there in the Author's\Member's section so it's clearly available)Over all? Unimpressed. The basic usage of the site seems to be gone in an attempt to be "hip and cool." Please bring back the "All," option so we don't need to follow 200+ feeds to just see all the really cool things the members create.

Bottle Cap Beads

Ok....  I have literally exhausted every avenue I can.  All I can find are already done bottle cap beads and their finished jewelry.  NO WHERE have I found the instructions on how to actually make the beads themselves.  I need help.  This is driving me INSANE!  Basically you take to bottle caps(and MAYBE you round em out with a ball peen hammer)  Then you weld? glue? them together and drill holes thru them.  I have hundreds and hundreds of bottle caps for this project.  All I need are the instructions to do this project.  I am begging anyone out there who knows of, or has made these please, please...  Write me here, communicate with me telepathically....  Something..  Anything!  I am begging my fellow Instructians for assistance! Thank you in advance!! Johana P.S.  I am posting a picture of what the finished things look like.  Some have the wavy edges and some don't   I don't care if they have one of the other.  I just need to make these guys!!

Design criteria for Ibles....

I just noticed that we have now standards that need to be followed if you want to publish an Instructable.Standards are good but not so much if the editing options for an Ible are at a standard from the year 2000.If I had fun designing something as simple as whistle that shall be created in a 3D printer: Then why would I need images showing how I designed it?Or why would I need images for the print settings or idea behind it?A community goes both ways! The editing tools are still sub standard and the images handling is a bad joke.If I need to explain something complex with the aid of images then of course I want the images in the right spot with the text - ever thought about this or visited website that offer similar after the year 2000?Usability is not just a means to provide the same look on all browsers and devices or to be able to use the most basic way to convert a website into a PDF.Usability is also for those who create it but that part seems to be lost for years now no matter how many times people ask, suggest or comment on the problem.I have no problem making my creations available elsewhere if that is the only way out here.If you want people to create proper Instructables then for crying out loud give them the means to do so!And fix the damn category selection bogus when posting in the community section.Has no use for years but why bother to fix it....Before you guys force people doing things your way only you should consider in what times we are and how proper usability would benefit this site....

Here we go again...

Can't remember how many times a topic was started to address bugs, problems, issues and requests/suggestions.But it seems time to allow the developers to read up what the users here actually want, so let me start with some topics and you just post what I left out:1. Working search options.2. Working sorting options.3. A usable Editor for both Ibles and the community section.4. Proper categories and channels, actually working of course...5. Proper HTML editing options until the things the user needs are actually implemented into the editor.6. No forced layouts for Ibles! If one needs a pic in a specific location within the text then for crying out loud stop forcing the user to create a new step for it!7. Transperency for contests! Who, why, where, what... There is no point in contest systems that constantly cause users to question why some Ible was featured or declared a winner!8. Testing changes or fixes before misusing the user as a beta tester - we struggle enough as it is and really don't need more stuff ups every week.9. Working rezising options!! What is the point if a user needs to crop, mame and mutilate his images just to somehow make them fit into the box that holds the preview for the Ible?10. Easy and usable links to the fullsize images in the library without mutilating the filenames! Ever tried to find your images in the library???11. Stop wasting time making a total mess out of this site and just start listening! Three years now expired without anyone actually providing anything that should be standard for every website that allows posting things ito provide good info.12. Make the users want to stay instead of doing your best to drive them to other websites - Instructables is no longer the only option to share your projects with the world but the only one totally ignoring their users.13. For crying out loud: Provide a proper feedback and bug reporting section where you guys actually check in and reply! Where do you want me to post this? Circuits, Workshop, Craft, Cooking, Living, Outside??? You guys must be joking here :(

Interference of codes problem

I want to ask for some help from you regarding of my final year project. I'm doing a simple SMART HOME project by using Arduino wemos. While compiling the function of the smart home, i've encountered some problem to compile it. Actually this is my first time using arduino and i don't really understand about the arduino ide syntax. Actually, there is no error in my coding. Basically, there are 5 functions that I want to put in that smart home. First, to control the lights, curtains and fans using ON/OFF Button, and security system only by using TSOP and IR, and lastly controlling the roof for the clothesline. So, I've problem with controlling the roof for the clothesline. The roof for the clothesline works when the rain sensor detects water/rain and it actually functioning when I do it separately. But, when I compile the code with the other functions, the roof is actually functioned, but it works only if I switch ON/OFF the lights/fans/curtains. So, here I attached the source code of my project with four functions, which are for the lights, fans, curtains and roof.

How do I make a Flash Cotton Flare Toy Cap Gun?

I wanted to make a cap gun that would fire flash cotton. I found a toy cap gun with individual chambers to each cap. I added copper tubes to load the flash cotton & fire out the muzzle of the gun. It didn't work. The first click & all the cotton I loaded went off at once. Anyone know how to modified a toy cap gun to accept individual cap shells, or how to make shells you can put caps in?

Feature page

So after the website's layout has changed the feature page disappeared. I can't even access it from https://www.instructables.com/featured/ . Is it gone forever? It was the best way to follow all new instructables posted here and I've been accessing it for years.
